True Dlrecfion of Current Flow koS In a Circuit. “In what direction does a current flow in the plate circuit of a vacuum tube?” is a question which has been asked me by a number of radio fans who want to delve into the real work- ings of a radio receiver. The answer to this question is con- fusing because it involves contradic- and High Springs R. E. L. YELLOTT & CO. tion of generally accepted terminol- ogy. To understand just what takes place {n an electrical circuit when a current flows it is necessary to under- stand something of the character of an electrical current and the way in | which a current is produced. An electrical circuit composed of a system of wires and instruments through which an electrical current can be made to flow, consists of mat- ter made up of positive and negative electrons at rest. Just as soon as the balance of the system is upset so that there is a preponderance of one or the other types of electrons a mo- tion or drift of electrons takes place, and. this is what Is referred to as an electrical current. Electron Current Flow. Although we usually speak of cur- rents flowing from the positive pole to the negative pole, the actual direc- tion of an electron stream is from the negative pole to the positive pole. Like magnets in which similar poles repel each other and unlike poles attract each other, similar charges repel each other and unlike charges attract each other. In a cir- cuit the negative electrons are at- tracted to any portion of the circuit which s charged positively. The vacuum tube forms a splendid example of this state of affairs. In the tube we have a fllament which, when heated, is made to give off neg- ative electrons. The plate of the tube | 3 | sist 4 | | other words, RESISTENCES BIG FACTOR IN RADIO Elimination of Surplus Per- mits Sharper Tuning and Improves Selectivity. Resistances are an inseparable fac- tor in all electrical circuits. It may not be there in the form of a rheo- stat, potentiometer or other plece of resistans apparatus, but every part of the circuit whether copper wire con- nections, condensers, coils or any other { unit has some resistance value. It ma | be great or small, but it exists and i factor in the circuit. Copper wire 1 good conductor, meaning its re nce is low, while a non-conductor simply means something that has a very high resistance. Present day radio apparatus is so de- signed as to reduce as far as practical all resistance in the tune circuits, Oscillation. This elimination of surplus resist ince permits much sharper tuning and therefore improves selectivity. But in radio frequency circuits it multiplies the tendency of tubes to go into oscil- lation, producing the assortment of squeals, howls, and whistle which not only come out of the loud speaker, but back up and go out in the air to play havoc with the neighbors’ reception The old and incorrect practice was to add a potentiometer in the second ary circuit of the radio frequency stages. This was equivalent to re- placing the resistance in the appara tus. It reduced the oscillation tend- but it likewise killed the selec- tivity that was desired and in addi- tion materially reduced the volume. Resistance should not be added where it becomes an integral part of the radio frequency circuits. The fundamental cause of oscillation is due to a great extent to the amount of, voltage across the plate circuit. If thi voltage is controlled so that it can be adjusted to a value just below the point where oscillation starts then ra dio frequency amplification can be used to full advantages. But this con- trol must not be such as to add re- sistance in the tuned eircuits. Plate Voltage Control. Oscillation can be effectively pre. vented if a variable resistance is con- nected in series between the plate o primary coils of the radio frequen transformers and the B battery to pre vent oscillation by reducing the plate voltage on the radio frequency tubes. Now by connecting a 2 MFD con denser between the B terminal of the primary on the radio frequency trans formers and the filament terminal of the tubes, this artificial resistance can be shunted out of the tuned circuit This condenser closes the plate cir- cuit to the filament of the tube for the radio frequency currents. In on account of the con- denser these currents do not have to pass through thte resistance—hence the resistance does not effect the tuning and selectivity. This variable resistance provides a means of reducing the plate voltage and therefore controls oscillation. s means of controling oscillation first utilized commercially by E _Andrews in the Deresnadyne re. ceiver. The use of this control for radio receiving sets is covered by patent applications but usa by the fan in building h ts or for remedy- ing encouraged. Mr. Andrews has now developed the trouble in a set he has made i use of this by-passed plate circuit re. | sistance as a volume control, as well as an oscillation control. This is done bv using an extremely high vari- able resistance having a maximum value of several megohms. The cir- cuit is just the same as for the con- trol of ‘oscillation. The first part of the resistance can be used for oscilla- tion control, and the high resistance part for controlling volume. Volume can thus be adjusted without the slightest distortion, anfi with great saving in B battery current. This combination control is known as the “Anostat,” derived from “an- ode,” meaning positive or plate and the word rheostat Organ Recitals Popular. The noon-day organ recitals present ed daily by WRC from the First Con- gregational Church, constitute one of the most popular radio features added to the programs of the Radio Corpor- ation station this Summer, and ar- rangements have been made to con- tinue these recitals through the Fall and Winter months. The recitals are played by a group of more than 20 artists, sdlecled from the ranks of the Capital organists. Among those who will appear at the noon hour this week are Malton Boy Adolf Torovsky, Charlotte Klein, George F. Ross and Gertrude Smallwood. e S R e connected into the circuit. You will notice in the diagram that the posi- tive pole of the “B" battery is con- nected with the plate side of the plate circuit. When the filament is heated and negative electrons are shot off from the filament, they are attracted by the positive plate and a current flow takes place from the filament to the plate. The confusion caused by arbitrarily naming the direction of current flow in the days before the exact nature of electrical currents was known is very similar to the confusion existing in the field of magnetism. We call the pole of a magnet which points toward the north the ‘“north pole” of the magnet and we also call the pole of the earth, toward which it points, the “North Pole.” Since unlike poles at- tract and like poles repel, both of these poles cannot actually be “North Poles.”” But while we understand the misnomer, we make no attempt to change it in the text books because of the confusion that would arise and the numerous changes which it would make necessary in our maps. We therefore say that the “north-seeking’ pole of a magnet is the “north pole” of the magnet, and while we continue to say that a current flows from the positive pole to the negative pole we know that the flow of electrons ac- tually takes place from the negative to_the positive poles.
