BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 23.—Specu- lative rails assumed the leadership in today's active and generally strong bond market. The most prominent on the advancing side were St. Louls- San Francisco incomes and the Sea- board Air Line adjustments. Both have long been trading favorites, but today they were in even more than the usual demand. Railroad Bonds Soar. The St. Louis-S8an Francisco issue at 97 was at a new high, up a point and a half, reviving the report that when the expected dividend increase is ordered on the comman stock an offer of exchange of stock for bonds will be made to the holders of these income 6s. The Seaboard bond at 83 was also up a point and a half, but not at its record top. In this cage, i§ was buying from the same sources that advanced the price of the stocgk te a record high which influenced the bonds. Klor- ida Western and Northern 7s had an ather spectacular rise amounting at one time to ¢ points. Banks Active Buyers. Prices in the high grade group were not much changed, but demand in over the counter trading was very brisk. | Insurance companies and savings banks were large buyers of desirable lots. The inquiry for the so-called “le | Bals" was better than in weeks, Foreign bonds were generally firm, but not quite as getive as on the pre- ceding day. . French s fell off from their top, which was only natural in view of the extent of the recent rise. Sentiment will be largely influenced by the result of the negotiations for the funding of the Krench debt to eat Britain, now in progress. Mexi- can bonds were a shade higher. MORE THAN 60,000 BUSSES IN OPERATION Rapid Development Most Remark- able Recent Factor in Industry. | By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 25.—Ranking first among manufacturing industries, the trend of developments in the auto: moblie business is of primary impor- tance, says a review by the New York Trust Co. In this connection it points out a tendency toward concentration, with 15 or 16 companies making from 80 to 90 per cent of the cars produced, although the output of the smaller manufacturers exceeds $300,000,000 a year. The increasing use of motor busses is considered one of the most remark- alfle development in the industry, 60,000 “common-carrier” busses now belng in operation, <. e e EXPORTS EXCEED IMPORTS. BALTIMORE, August 25 (Special). The balance of trade on imports nd exports through the port of Bal- timore last week was in Uncle Sam's favor, $2,227,140 being shipped, while imports totaled, $1.162.911, according report of the collector of customs.
