It you have followed the past three articles carefully, you will have found that what increased the efficiency of a coil from the standpoint of obtata- ing low distributed capacity often increased the resistance of the coil} so that its efliciency was increased in one respéct at the expense of de- crease of efficiency in another di- rection. 1f, for instance, you decrease the resistance losses by increasing the size of the wire, you run up against the disadvantage of increase in dis- tributed ca city because of larger surface of wire exposed to produce a_ greater condenser effect and you also run into the slight increase in resistance produced by the eddy cur- rent losses in the wire itself. it 1f you reduce the distributed ca- pacity by using small-sized wire, you increase the resistance of the coil. Reducing Losses. If you use an enamel insulation, you will gain from the standpoint of re- ducing losses from leakage and sur- face corrosion, but vou will lose in the matter of increase of distributed capacity. 1t you space the turns, aie or insulation, you decrease the | distributed capacity but You increase the resistance of the coil because spacing lowers the inductance effect and it will be necessary to use more | turns to get the desired value of inductance.
