bt NEW HIGH RECORDS INSEVERAL ISSUES Week Starts Off With Many Sharp Gains—Pressure on Motor Shares. BY STUART P. WEST. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 24.—The week on the Stock Exchange opened with the price movement uncertain and no indication of a change in sentiment. The decline in a number of stocks which had been bid up sharply last week might have been attributed to the growing concern over the week end about the technical position of the share On the other hand, there were numerous new high records and gains of 1 to 8 points United States Steel common reached a new top for the current movement. At it was wtihin less than 5 points of the best price for the year. Sub- sequently, when the general list be- came unsettled, Steel common fell back, Rails at New Highs. b rpassed their pre 5 included St. Louis apeake and_Ohio, Missour Kans: Sity Southern, St. Wabash, Hudson Western Mary The last named was unusually During the present week the tements will be pub- The rai vious hi T Southwyestern, Che Seaboard Air Line, lished, a favor the stock: prices for the impression. Higher Call Money Cause of Selling At Finish. NEW YORK, August 24 (P).—Alter- nate periods of heaviness and strength characterized today’'s stock market. An outburst of strength in the early trading lifted more than 30 issues to new peak prices for the vear, but sub- sequent profit taking and bear sell- ing, apparently based on the theory that the market was entitled to at least a “technical reaction,” brought about sharp declines from the earlier high levels. Total sales approxi- mated 1,450,000 shares. The closing was easy. Marking up of the call money rate to 414 per cent brought about a renewal of selling pressure in the late trading, many of the earlier gains belng wiped out. Nash Motcrs extended its loss to 18 yoints. Markets at a Glance NEW YORK. August 24.—Stocks, easy; Chrysler soars 11% polnts to rec- ord high. Bonds, steady; French is- sues irregular. The high-grade rails and industrials, however, were in greatest demand. Higher prices were recorded for such representative issues as Atchison General 4s, South- ern Pacific refunding 4s and Delaware and Hudson refunding 4s among -the rails and United States Steel sinking funds 5s among the industri French Bonds Leaders. French bonds were the leaders of the foreign group. French 7s sell- ing above 100 in volume were at a new high for the vear. Frerich 8s ex- ceeded their previous high made last week. French Cities 6s, all three is- sues, gained nearly point. Depart- ment of Seine 78 at 90 were within 1 point of their best previous quoia- tlons. French 7s were within a frac tion of their point for 1925. Improve- ment was noted also in French rail- way securities. Brazil 8s were heavy, as were the two City of Rio Janeiro issues, but activity was limited. In the domestic rails feature was the advance in Baltimore & Ohio Toledo-Cincinnati division 4s up at one time a point. This B. & O. issue has been selling out of line with other bonds of the same road. Missouri Pacific general 4s weré unusually ac- tive, up. fractionally. Selling at 65 they are lower priced than any other 4 per cent bond of a road as strong financially as the Missourl Pacific Maryland 45 made a small gain, as did Seaboard Afr Line adjustments. The newly offered International Telephone & Telegraph 5z per cent debentures were in us vigorous demand a8 on the day they were first issued. The $8,000,000 City of Munich 7 per cent serial bonds will be offered on Wednesday at_prices to give an aver- age yield of 7% per cent. TRADE FIGURES NOW ABOVE LAST YEAR Comparisons Used to Force Stocks Upward—Bear Factors Also Noted. SW YORK, August 24—In seek- ing explanations to account for the upturn in the stock market Wall Street recently has shown a disposi tion to base all its. comparisons of trade figures with those of a year ago rather than with conditions pre vailing earlier in the year. The re- sults of this procedure have been to show business up in a favorable light, but many in the financial district are aware that a bear movement could as easily produce the statistics to ex- plain a ‘decline in prices, such as the smaller 1925 wheat crop, the cut in daily steel output and the smaller | total of unfilled tonnage as compared with the Spring months. MORE COAL SHIPMENTS BOOST RAIL EARNINGS Western Maryland's Gross Income Shows Gain of 43 Per Cent. Special Diepatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, August 24.—Resump- tion of operations of coal mines served by the Western Maryland Railway was largely responsible for a conspic- uous increase of 43 per cent In gross earnings derived from the movement of coal and coke revealed in the com- pany's statement for the week ended August 14. During that period revenues from that soutce totaled $191,250, compared with $133,953 during the similar week in 1924. Other freight receipts were also up substantially above last year, having increased 16 per cent. Total gross revenues for the period since January 1 have crossed last year's figures, showing an increase of 2 per cent. —_—e Tide Water Ofl.. 824 82% Timken R B (14) 41% 4l Tobac Prod (8).. 92 91 103% e Tob Prod A (7).. CHICAGO, August 24.—The wheat market on the Board of Trade opened in rather listiess fashion here today. An easier tone abroad accounted for some selling of deferred deliveries. September showed strength over De- cember, as the September market acted tight and advanced on moder- ate buying. Commission houses were buying September and selling Decem- ber wheat. The opening, unchanged to % up, found September at 1.63% to 1.63% and December at 1.61% to 1.61%. Both months fell off! fraction- ally aiter the opening, but later stead- fed and moved within a narrow range. There was little actlon in corng which seemed to sympathize with the movement in the leading grain. After starting unchanged to % down, with September nt 1.03% to 1.03%,. there was a brief rally and then a fractional reaction, with prices moving in nar- 'row Hmits. Oats opened 4 Wp to % down, with September at 40 to 401, and then sagged with the other grain Provisions were inactive and lower.
