A distress call was immediately sent out by .the wireless operator, and launches from the 40 naval ships at anchor in the cove rushed to the rescue. The commands of the officers were obeyed to the letter by the stricken passen- gers, those who came out unscratched sald today, Immediately there was a rush for the rails. Two men are known to have jumped overboard, and were picked up by passing boats. Others climbed to the gunwales and attempt- ed to reach the top deck.. Helping hands were lowered to aid them In their rush to safety. Boats were low- ered when it wa thought the craft was going to sink, while life mats and deck gear were tossed overboard. Capt. McVey said that soon the pilot house was so enveloped by steam that he could not see any part of his ship. Many of the victims failed to hear the report, and their first warning was the swift rush of deadly steam, which trapped them. Those who saw the disaster from shore described it ‘STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €, WEDNESDAY, Wyoming, the scout cruisers Denver and Raleigh, the tender Dobbin and scores of torpedo boat destroyers swarmed about. Rescue Work Feverish. The Navy rescue partles worked foverishly to get the passengers off. Capt. Charles . Riggs, commanding ofMcer at the hospital, had summoned every available Navy physiclan as well as priests and ministers from the naval vessels in the harbor. Inside the hospital two wards were prepared to recefve the victims. So swift did they come that many were placed on the floors outside as every member of the base Medical Corps as well as the naval nurses worked with feverish haste. The majority of those who died at the Naval Hospital were in such shape, physicians said, that they could only try to make their last moments as painless as was medically possible. Amid the moaning and screaming victims walked clergymen of all de- nominations giving spiritual aid. The Mackinac left Pawtucket ves- terday morning for Newport. The de- parture was delayed almost an hour _while steam fitters of the company placed a patch on the boiler. The ex- cursionists arrived at Newport short- ly after 1 o'clock and toured the town during the afternoon. The de parture was made from Newport at 5:40 o'clock and 15 minutes latér, when the first mile had been covered, the explosion occurred. The first of the survivors, those who jumped overboard, were picked up by bassing launches and landed at Gov- ernment landings. This party con- sisted of three men, one woman and a child. ~All were badly scalded. Be- sides the Naval Hospital, the Newport City Hospital received victims while those with minor injuries were treated on the spot by a contingent of naval doctors. The Newport Red Cross established a temporary relief station in Wash- ington Square, in the center of New- port, where those suffering from minor injuries were cared for by a staft of volunteer nurses, HOOVER ORDERS PROBE. An investigation by the Govern- ment's steamboat inspection was ordered today into the disaster aboard the steamship Mackinac. Secretary Hoover personally in- structed George Uhler, Inspector gen- eral of the service, to proceed imme- diately to Providence to go into all phases of the accident and its possi ble causes and to report back on the results of his inquiry. Suit for injunction has been filed in the District Supreme Court by the Davey Tree Expert Co. of Kent, Ohio, against Harry V. S. Lord of this city, charging an infringement on the com- pany’s patent right as a “tree doctor.” The court is told that Lord has re- inforced a number of trees of the lawns of Joseph C. Grew, Assistant Secretary of State, at 2840 Woodland drive, and on the grounds of Dr. W Franklin Phillips at 1025 New Jersey avenue northwest.
