The “C” battery is one of those things which bring forcibly to one’s attention the old saying that “good things come In .small packages.’ The small size of the “C” battery has caused it to be overlooked In many circuits. Some designers have sacri- ficed the cause of “B” battery econ- omy and amplifier efficiepcy at the altar of simplicity of battery connec- tions and have left the “C” battery out of their circuits for the sake of climinating the extra connections | which such a battery requires and | the occasional attention and replace- | ment which it entails. Such practice is regretful because |the “C” battery is a very valuable |item in increasing the efficiency and |cutting down the cost of mainte- {nance of a set. Its use produces | hetter tone quality by eliminating distortion and it reduces expense of maintenance by bringing the operat- ing point of the vacuum tubes to a lower point on the characteristic curve so that the normal plate cur- rent is reduced about one-half. The “B" batteries will last about twice as long when using a “C" battery as they would if the “C” battery was left out of the circuit. C Battery Connections. As far as simplicity of connections is concerned the addition of one or vo binding posts for making the C" battery connections can hardly be said to make the battery connec- tions too complicated. The positive terminal of the “C" battery should always be connected with the nega- tive terminal of the “A” battery so that it is possible to make the nega- tive “A” battery terminal of the set do double duty in acting both as the negative “A” battery terminal and as the positive “C” battery terminal. The only extra termiggl required then 1s a binding post to Sérve as the terminal connection for the negative terminal of the “C” battery. To change the wiring of the set to n's stories. ... . The negative 434-voit ter- minal of the “C” battery is connected with this terminal.
