Special Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, August 11.—The Stock Exchange movement today was extremely mixed. It reflected a wider range of opinion regarding speculative operations than has existed for some time In some quarters much was made of the current high average of prices and the huge total of brokerage loa On the other. hand, the reactiona tendencies which were displayed were looked upon as only natural following so extensive a rise. Conflicting Price Movements During Day With Irregular Closing. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 11.—Highly conflicting price movements developed in today’s stc market. The Leneral[ market developed a reactionary trend in the early trading when seiling pres- sure was renewed against the oils, motors and public utilities, rallied under the leadership of the east. alers and southwestern carriers, but became spotty again in the clo ing dealings because of the uneasi- s created by the violent fluctua- tions in high-priced industrial issues. United States Realty, 1] Electric and Radio Cor- ion opened 1 to 1% points higher and Norfolk and Western and "o common each duplicated their 3 highs on initial sales. Jersey Central jumped 4 points. Bullish demonstrations were soon started in the specialties. General Rallway Signal soared over 14 points to a new record top at 270% on pub- lication of a semi-annual earnings statement showing net profits about double those of the corresponding period last yvear. Jersey Central quickly extended its gain to 9 points and General Baking moved up nearly 4 points to’'a new top at 172 before the end of the first half hour. An_unconfirmed report had it that the Pennsylvania Railroad was buy- ing & block of Norfolk and Western stock, subsequently to be utilized as collateral for a bond issue, the pro- ceeds of which were to go in part to pay for the acquired shares.
