Hope that Congress will enact the new insurance code for the District at the next session was expressed to the Commissioners yesterday in the annual report of Thomas M. Baldwin, superintendent of insurance. The report shows that during the calendar year 1924 the total of pre. miums paid by Washingtonians for all kinds of insurance was $19,637,322.58 Losses paid by insurance companies during the year amounted to $6,513,- 884.33. These figures represent an in- crease of $600,000 in premiums over 1923 and an increase of $200,000 in | losses over 1923. The insurance department issued 432 licenses for the writing of all classes of insurance during 1924, an increase of 41 over the license total of 1923. | Mr. Baldwin stated that a bill also would be introduced in the new Congress for the regulation of fra- ternal insurance, which is not covered in the proposed new insurance code of the District. Plan Tunnel Under Cascades. In an effort to wipe out the Cascade Mountains in Washington as a trade barrier between the eastern and west- ern portions of that State, a plan is on foot to build a low-level tunnel under this widely, known mountain range.
