President Roosevelt _Bremen, J alparaiso. I Hamburg, DUE TODAY. ol Thuringia - ‘THE EVENING INDIANS SUE L. 3. FOR $68,707,343 Tribes in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington Press Claims Under New Law. By the Associated Press. The United States has been made defendant in a suit involving claims for $68,707,843 by Indians in Montana, Wyaming, Idaho and Washington. The action was taken under the law enacted March 13, 1924, by which ju- risdiction for adjudication of the dis- pute over the'land was conferred upon the Court of Claims. The_tribes in- velved are the Blackfeet, Blood, Ple- gan, Gros Ventre and the Nez Perce. Some of the lands are a part of the Yellowstone and Glacler national parks. It was claimed that their rights in the common hunting grounds in south- west Montana and northwest Wyo- ming, secured Dy the treaty of 1855, were taken from them without their consent and without compensation shortly after that treaty was signed. They allege also that certain lands in Montana were taken under the then unratified treaties of July and Sep- tember, 1868, and that some other lands in Montana were taken from them and restored as pulfic domain by an executive order of August 19, 1874. The claim was advanced also that Congress, by an act of May 11, 1910 took away from these Indians their right to hunt and fish and cut timber in what is now Glacier National Park.
