One of the mos: acteristics of a “amplification ¢ term which expre: voltage amplification which it is pos- sible to obtain when the tul as an_amplifier. It is an indi the efficiency of the tube in ampl ing or strengthening a received cur- rent important char- cuum tube is its stant.” This is a | es the raximum Mutual Conductance of Tube. Another very important considera- tion in determining the efficiency of a tube irrespective of filament or plate current requirements is the “mutual conductance” of a tube. This term is a measure of the controlling effect of the gru] potential on the plate current rce the action of a | vacuum tube, regardless of its use as detector, oscillator, radio or audio | trequency amplifier, is based on the | controjling effect of the grid potentials on the plate current, this factor is a very important one in determining the efliciency of a tube. The higher the value of the mutual conductance of a tube the higher will be the effi ciency of the tube, because a high mu tual conductance means that very slight grid potential variations will produce rather high variations of plate current. Conductance being the | opposite of resistance, the unit used | for this factor is the “mho,” which, i vou will notice, is “ohm" spelled back- wards. The mho being too large for | ordinary figuring, a_smaller unit, the “micromho,” is used for calculations. A micromho is equal to one-millionth of a mho. The mutual conductance in mi- cromhos of a tube can be fi directly from the plate to ent impedance and the amplification con- stant of the tube. It is equal to the amplification constant of the tube multiplied by 1,000,000 and divided by the value of the plate to filament im- pedance. The amplification slightly while the impedance varies considerably with changes in grid potential and plate voltage, so that the mutual conductance of a tube must be given under certain condi- tions of plate voltage, grid potential and fllament voltage. constant varies broadeasting equipment is | radio engineers, for be WLW, Jr., which will the floating station of its owner's super-power ng station WLW, Cincin- The call letters will | WASHINGTON, D.
