THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D BRITISH RAILROADS SEEK TO CUT WAGES Employes Called Into Conference by Officials—Reduced Rev- enues Cited. By the Associated Press. LONDON, June 25.—Representa- tives of the British railways and their employes in all branches of the werv- ic8 are meeting here today to discuss proposals by the companies for a rigid economy campaign. The proposals in- clude reduction of all emoluments, from the lordly salaries of the rail: way directors to the wages of the humblest workers. It is said that one plan to be submitted to the conference would, if adopted, entall a saving of £85,000 weekly under this head alone. The railway managers are credited with the intention of giving the union delegates fullest details regarding the depleted revenues and resources of the companles arising from the de- cline in passenger and freight traffic, the latter being one of the attendants of the prevalent trade depression. From talk in labor ecircles the im- pression is gained that the railway men will not necessarily oppose the reduction, but there are some matters pending between the companies and workers, settlement of which may be demanded before the question of a general reduction in pay Is enter- tained. The whole position is some- what involved, and the outcome can- not be foreseen. 014 “Mammy” Is Honored. An exclusive white cemetery in Ma- con, Ga., gave up its distinction the other day in order to do honor to an ante-bellum negress, Anna Jordan, who recently died. A negro preacher conducted the service in the home of Mrs. R. H. Smith, in whose family she had been “mammy’ for 38 years. Burial was in the Smith family plot after every honor possible had been pald by members of the family in which she had served so long.
