2 MINSTER PLEADS FOR BIRTH CONTROL Quality Needed to Remedy Quantity, Swedenborg Speaker Declares. iated Press. ATI, June 18.—A civill- of quality to remedy the evils of a civilization of quantity was urged by Rev. Paul Dresser of Bath, Me., in an address on the need for scientific birth control delivered here vesterday at the annual convention of the Swedenborg Church. He as- cribed s wrongs, crimes, and a %ood shar Boverty to Indiscrim. nate procreation, which produces Children unfit for life and useless to soclety. “The laws of countrfes and of churches favor the production of many children,” Mr. Dresser said By the Assod “The st of individual worth, and the church ever works for members. “In the scramble for numbers it has been overlooked that the worst evils, civil and religious, are due to overproduction of the human kind. It is true that a high percentage of e to arrested develop- ment, and also true that a high amount o ted development is due to bad natal and post-natal con- ditions.” Opposes Repression. He denied the practicabllity of diminishing the birth rate of unde- sirables by any repression of the sex instinct. “Love,” he exclaimed, “in itself is a union of souls, a conjunction of minds, an endeavor toward con- junction. It is natural that husband and wife should enjoy full expression and that they should be spontaneous therein. Modern psychology and our new church psychology agree that ssion of marriage love, like , should continue free and crimes ar spontaneo The speaker advocated, rather, the practice of scientific methods to diminish the birth rate. While ad- mitting the likelihood of abuse of the practice, he insisted that the in- telligent application of the majority would more than outweigh any abuses. AMUSEMENTS KEITH'S—Ina Claire.
