Russell Dean, in command of No. 11 police precinct, this morning attended his last meeting of the police captains and lieutenants at police headquarters, having applied for re tirement. He was granted a leave of absence for two weeks, at the end of which time he will leave the depart- ment after a service of nearly 40 years. As soon as it was definitely learned that he had made application for re tirement, it is stated, lieutenants of the several precincts started the ball Genuine Values Seldom Offered A Limited Number of Dresses, Coats, Wraps, Skirts, Sports Clothes, Sweaters rom our regular Stock of tgh-Class Apparel. A. Fenning. Tt was said today that police offi- clals have not determined upon a successor to Capt. Dean, and it is probable that Inspector Charles A. Evans, acting chief of police, will con- sult with Maj.' Daniel Sullivan, who is sick, before making a recommenda- tlon to the Commissioners. It is de- clared that the promotion will be made on merit and not because a particular applicant is able .to muster a great amount of influence. Capt. Dean, one of the older and most popular members of the force, has been in the service since Novem- ber 11, 1885, most of his duty being performed in the harbor precinct. As! a boy, Russell Dean had followed work ‘on river boats, starting on the lower Potomac in Charles County, where he was born. He was given ful! command of the precinct in June, 1910, when J. R. Sutton, who had been harbormaster and later a police lleutenant, died. His first work in the precinct was in charge of the Vigilant, the first boat purchased by the District for work which was in 1888. . Dean was promoted 1217 Conn.
