By the Associated Press NEW YORK, May 29.—The possi- bility of a revaluation of the French franc around the G-cent level, which would permit its stabllization on a gold basis, has been engaging the in- terest of Wall Street bankers to a growing extent since Great Britain's restoration of the gold standard. The return of France to a gold basis, which is reported to be one of the ambitions of Finance Minister Calllaux, unquestionably would be of tremendous importance, bankers ugreed, but would "be accomplished only in the face of great difficulties, the foremost of which is the prejudice of the French public against any change in the value of the currency. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 29,—The feature of the day in bonds was the per- sistent buying in high-yielding foreign issues. This appeared in two groups, one the obligations of northern Euro- pean nations selling on & less than 6 per cent basis and the other in the more speculative South American de- scriptions. Much of this buying was % |for account of dealers, on the theory that the advance elsewhere in the bond list would result eventually in increased public interest in these for- eign securitles. Issues in Demand. Issues in special demand were Den- mark 6s, Netherlands 6s of 1954, and Dutch East Indles 6s of 1047 and of 1962. Bolivia 8s, Brazil 7s and Rio Janeiro 6s. French bonds were steady, making no response to the report from Paris that it was proposed to stabilize the franc at about one-quar- ter of its pre-war gold value. In today's generally strong market for domestic issues there was one con- spicuously weak spot and that was In- ternational Mercantile Marine 6s, which made a new low for the year for the second day in succession. At 851 the price was still 6 points above the low of 1924, but more than 6 points below the high of 1925. Pan-American Sixes Weak. There was also a drop in Pan-Ameri- can Petroleum 6s corresponding to the weakness in stock, while fraction- al losses were sustained in some of the other oll bonds. On the other hand, tractions were strong, with Brooklyn Manhattan Transit 68 making a new high and with further recovery in the Interborough list and in Third Avenue adjustments. Higher prices were the rule for rail- road bonds. Chesapeake and Ohio con- vertible 65 moved up point and there was good demand for all Missouri Pa- cific 6s, including the new series “E" certificates which were admitted to trading today. Missouri-Kansas-Texas adjustments resumed their advance and International Great Northern ad- justments went along also. New Offering Sold. Today's offering of $10,000,000 Pa- cific Gas and Electric bs at prices to vield 5.30 per cent was readily ab- sorbed. Important new financing is scheduled for next week, including a *|'Norway offering and one for the ac- count of the Consolidated Gas of Bal- timore. 'ON, D. NEW YORK, May 29.—An ad vance of 5 to 10 per cent in prices of all grades of tires will be put into effect on June 1 by several of the leading companies in_the industry. Announcement by Fire- stone Tire and Rubber Co. today that its prices would be increased was followed with a similar_de- cision by the United States Rub- ber Co., Goodyear Tire and Rub- ber Co. and the B. F. Goodrich Co. EARLY DOWNTURNS IN GRAIN MARKET Double Holiday Cause of Profit Taking in Corn, Wheat and Oats. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, May 29.—Large deliv eries of May contracts here led to an early downturn in wheat prices to- day. This was the last day for month end settlement of accounts, and the fact that deliveries were large was generally taken to indicate that chances were remote for any sharp bulge in values at the I Knowledge that a double holiday was ahead tend- ed also to induce much selling out to realize profits. Opening prices, 13 lower to % higher, May 1.70% to 1.7 and July 1.653 to 1.66, were followed by a general setback that carried the market down to 1.67% for May and 1.63% for July. Corn and oats were easy, sympathiz- ing with wheat. After opening at 's to 1% advance, July 1.18 to 1.18%, the corn market receded all around to well below yesterday's finish. Oats started at 1 cent decline to 3% advance, July 48% to 48%. Later all months showed some loss. Provisions were responsive to lower quotations on hogs.
