Bureau officials contend that the one big fact known to date is that static is directional. * one of them sald today, “that is our only gulde in our search for the cause and the re- moval of the annoyance.” “It is true,” it was explained, “that static can be reduced. But so far nearly all of the static-reducers have at the same time reduced the strength of the signals. These methods of de*| creasing the interference do not there- | fore lead to the real solution of the | problem. What we must have in mind is a method by which static can be removed without affecting the sig nal strength.” Crowds Noises Out. Interesting work has been carried out by the Radio Corporation of | America in its fight against static in- terference in transoceanic communi cation. Taking the directional fea ture of static into account, it has con structed its receiving station at River- head, Long Isdand, in such a way that undesired noises can be crowded in behind the telegraphic signals and thereby eliminated to some extent. The increase of power used by | broadcasting stations also will be ob- | served carefully by the engineers at the bureau this Summer to see to | what extent stronger signals will over- ride the static disturbances. Many suggestions for elimination of static have drifted into the bureau and all are given careful considera tion. The underground antenna and the tree antenna, championed by Gen Squier of the Signal Corps, have been the two most interesting of the re- ducers to be brought before the public this year. SCHOOLS AID NEAR EAST. | Children Will Help Make Bundle Day a Success. Children in all the public schools of the District have a part in making the Near East Relief Bundle day, May 27, a success. Permission has been granted by the Board of Education for pupils to distribute handbills to their homes and friends asking that old clothes be given to clothe refu gees in the Near East. The Fire Department again is co- operating by receiving gifts of cloth- ing at the various fire stations. “This fine co-operating in this work of mercy,” Harold F. Pellegrin, head of the {ocal Near East Relief organ ization, said today, “is greatly pleas-| ing. I hope every mother will see| that the children in her home leave bundle of east-off clothing at the near est fire station on the way to school. ! I hope every motorist coming to down town Washington will leave a bundle as big as possibje.” WASHINGTON, D. C, FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1925. FIFTEEN MINUTES OF RADIO EACH DAY Parts, Kits or Complete Sets?
