EVENING STAR,“WASHINGTON, “D. T R R T R Mr. Way, hands of the attackers. According to the story, the attack followed the theft of a letter Mr. Way had written to his son warning him against eating Florida celery be- cause he believed the spray used by the growers was deleterious to health. Mr. Way himself is introducing a new spray. Mr. Way said he was set upon in the heart of the town by four men who forced him in.o an automobile and took him to the woods after tell- ing him that if the let.er which had been intercepted had reached New York it would have ruined their busi- ness. Mayor Lake of Sanford is starting an investigation of the matter today. Dispatches say that the news was a complete surprise to officials there, as no report had been made to the au- thorities. Mr. Carter said he had written F. P. Forster, president of the First Na- tional Bank at Sanford, and Mr. For- ster had condemned ‘‘the outrage,” but suggested that Mr. Way “must - | have been equally guilty.” Not Reported in Sanford. SANFORD, Fla., May 12.—The an- nouncement from New York last night of the alleged kidnaping and whip- ping of Benjamin T. Way came as a surprise to officials here, Mayor Forrest Lake of Sanford said. At _police headquarters and the sheriff’s_office officials said that no report of the affair had been made to the authorities. Mayor Lake prom- ises a rigid investigation. It was almost impossible to get her husband to go out after dinner. And his stay-at-home ten- dencies bored her to a point where she was almost ready to give up in despair. That evening she was particularly anxious to get him to do a little dancing. Some neighbors who had a wonderful new radio had invited them.
