CHAPTER XV. T Plunge Into Deeper Waters. Beforg approaching the door, I took stock of the house. It was tall and thin,-dating, so far as I could judge, from the eighteenth century. The windows were dark and shuttered and 1o light was to be perceived anywhere. Finding that I could gain little infor- mation outside, .1 walked up to the door, a massive oak affair with a brass knocker shining dully from the center. 1 remembered the signals given by Elsa in the Rue Etienne Du mont, and thought it well to knock in the same manner. Accordingly, I selzed the knocker, gave one heavy rap, then a series of light ones and finally two short, sharp knocks. A panel which I had not previously re marked slid sideways behind a small grille, and two eyes moved shiftil) behind the bars. “Ephesus,” T said. “They are not dead, but sleep,” re- Ylied the individual on the other side. A moment later the door was opened, and I found myself at the foot of a narrow flight of stairs, at the 10p of which stood an oil lamp, reek. ing foully, its dull flame casting weird shadows on the walls and ceiling of 1he landing. “Maj. Adler is above, sir,” said the sman who had admitted me. “But we were expecting Prof. Kreutzemark.” “He has been delayed,” T answered shortly and turned to the stairs. 1 was half-way up when the man «called after me. “And the car, Herr Lieutenant?” “I shall not need it again,” I re- plled. “Very good, sir,” he said. *You will find Maj. Adler on the first floor, sec- ond door on the right.” T nodded and proceeded on my way Bnd the next moment was knocking on the door in question. “Herein,” said a voice which I rec- ©ognized as that of my Uncle Fritz. Entering the room. I found him Iving on a settee drawn up close to a big stove—one of those porcelain af- fairs common to Germany and Swit- zerland, and ornamented with a pro- fusion of figures and designs—a beau- tiful and valuable specimen of the old art of faience making, brought to per- fection by the Nuremburg craftsmen of the fifteenth.century. The room was lighted by half a dozen candles and was consequently shadowy in the corners. It contained, so far as I could see, some old oak furniture and a large writing desk in front of a window. It was very hot, all the win- dows being closed and shuttered. At the other side of the room sat Schreckermann, sprawling in a huge chair, his waistcoat undone, smoking one of those pipes dear to the German bourgeois. with a stem about a foot Yong and a bowl of china modeled to represent a skull. A table stood between the two men, upon which were two large mugs of beer. Uncle Fritz and Uncle Ulric were evidently taking their ease after the labors of the day. Adler looked up at me as I entered. “So,” he said, gruffly, “you've ar- ¥ived. T clicked my heels and drew myself ko attention. ““Ja, Herr Major.” 1 answered. 1'had decided, while driving through the streets of Basel, that with Fritz flattery was my best cue. He had seemed to me to be the type of Prus- #lan who can most easily be managed by playing up to him, and I deter- amined to conduct the interview as much as possible on orderly room lines. I would be the eager but dis- ciplined young officer, deferring re- rpectfully to the crusty old major, to whom all the problems of life were as an open book “B-but wh-where's the Professor?” stammered Schreckermann. T had_expected this and was ready for it. Taking a pace forward, which brought me into the shadow, I drew myself up and repeated my next words in as toneless and official voice as I could muster. “The Professor, gentlemen, is com- ing later,” 1 said. “He has charged me with the following message: “He regrets that pressure of work has prevented him from leaving Ge- neva this evening. He hopes, how- ever, to be in Basel by tomorrow at midday.” Fritz gave an exclamation of annoy- ance, and I hastened to soothe him. “He bids me congratulate Maj. Ad- ler and Herr Schreckermann on their excellent work,” I added, in the man- 10GE . wete, Come onl Le's GET STARTED. | PLAY A ROTTEN GAme Teo OUGHTA HAVE A LoTTA FuUM By FRANCIS BEEDING (Copyright, 1925, by Little, Brown & Co.) ner of a subaltern intrusted with an official commendation. “Humph!” snorted Fritz, beautifully. “Not coming, isn't First time I've known the or late for anything. What's keeping him at Genev “I don’t know, sir,” I replied, “but I think it's something in connection with the disposal of the English- man.” Fritz grunted again. “He seems to be wasting too much time over that affair,” he grumbled.! “The Professor's much too fond of ng his confounded speeche: ouldn't he cut the fellow’s at and have done with it? “Well,” he continued, now genial, “you needn't stand there any longer. You're not on parade. Take a chair. I did as I was bid, pulling up an old oak armchair to the table, and keeping as far as 1 could in the shadow cast by the flickering can- dles. Although my resemblance to Karl was very remarkable, and al-| though T was dressed in his-clothes, I did not want to take any unnece! sary risks. Uncle Fritz was obviously pleased with my demeanor. He lolled baci® on the settee, the mug of beer in his hand, enjoying the opportunity which I was trying to afford him of being affably insolent to a militar subordinate. “Now, I suppose,” he continued, “you want that document we've heard so much about. The arrange- ment was that you should take it at once to Hanover and deliver it to Capt. Z. I bowed. “Those were the Professo; structions,” 1 answered. “I hand it to him personally. “Once you've obtained the signa- | ture of that mystery man, our part of the job is finished. And who'll get the credit for it, do you suppose? Will it be the man who did the work, who saved this organization? Not a bit of it. You, my young friend, will go off to Hanover and get all the praise and all the pudding, while 1 sit here and wait for the Profes sor to come and talk my head off. “Really, sir,” T protested, “I'm sure that no one realizes more than the Professor the excellence of the work vou have done. He was only say ing as I left, Herr Major, that in his next report to the Seven—-"" Fritz raised his hand in a gesture arrest. “That's taking | it grufil n- ‘o] was to| of g enough, young man,” he said, glancing at Schreckermann. “There are certain persons whom we prefer to be nameles He rose heavily from the settee and lounged across to the desk, reaching for his keys. He unlocked | the top, and I heard him fumble| among the papers which the desk contained. Presently he returned, bearing a single sheet of paper, which | I recognized to be the document in question. This he placed in an en- velope and handed it to me, saying: “Well, orders are orders, and you'd better take the document at once. And vou'll, perhaps, be more careful with it than that little rat of a Jew." I took the envelope, and, putting it away in my pocket, rose to when Schreckermann stopped me. “Don’t go vet,” he said. “There nno v-v-violent hurry. You can't get a train before 9 o'clock. Have you had anything to eat?” “No, but I can get something later,” 1 replied. “Sit down, young fellow,” said Fritz in the best of humor. “You can't work properly without food.” He waved me back to my chair, at the same time crossing the room and opening the door. I had apparently played my part rather too well. I had put Fritz in the humor to be hospitable, and I saw that it would be inadvisable to slight his friendly advances. “Anton!” he bawled to some unseen | person below. “Bring up some food and some more beer, and don't be long about it.” | I was in a fever to depart, but was afraid to show by eagerness. Wait- ing for the food to appear, I studied my hosts narrowly. Schreckermann was obviously tired out by the events of the day. He had yawned several times since I had come into the room, and he had the air of a man who had rather be in bed. Fritz, on the other hand, was of a wakeful disposition, obviously elated and prepared to talk. Without in the least degree being drunk, he had evidently been relaxing after his strenuous labors. I thought it might be useful to encourage him 1 S PoSE You' | provide 80,1 RE|( 1F PLAYING A PERFECT GAME MEANS I'™M A SHARIL THEMN I'M ONE SSSSSSS7 to talk, particularly of recent events in Geneva. “Perhaps, Major, you would tell me how you managed to obtain the docu- ment?” I said, as an elderly individual, wearing an apron of brown sacking, entered bearing u large jug of beer and some cold ham, sausages and bread on a plate. My suggestion was evidently most acceptable. Fritz seized the jug, re- filled the tankards, and poured me out a welcome drink. 'Then he raised hi mug on high, and, looking toward us, >rosit ‘We raised our tankards in response and drank. Fritz stretched himself on the settee and began. He and Schreckermann, on leaving the Professor, had ap- parently dressed themselves in the uniform of the Genevese police. Thus attired, they had gone to the secre- tariat, where they had asked for the establishment officer. This individual the official in charge of the inter. nal administration of the secretariat, such would naturally be the person to be approached by the po- lice. He was a Swiss, it appeared, and Fritz had experienced but little diffi- culty in persuading him that he was a member of the Genevese police, who had called with the object of obtaining clues in connection with the mu of M. Lavelle. He desired, he said, to examine the office of the murdered man. The establishment officer had ccordingly conducted him to that room, where he had made a super- ficial examination. Before starting for the secretariat, Adler had scrawled on a piece of plain quarto naper the fol- lowing words: “From my examination of the letters contained in file No. 4-90347-81756, I——." He succeeded in lipping this sheet, unobserved by the establishment officer, beneath some of the litter on Lavelle’s desk, and then turned over the papers until he came to it. He had discovered it with an exclamation of surprise and interest, seized it, read it and immediately de. manded to see the dossier in question, pointing out that the incompleted note seemed to indicate that Lavelle had been working on this dossier just before his death and that it might a clue. The establishment officer had at once sent for the file, and on its arrival Fritz had succeeded in finding and extracting the document without being detected. He chreckerman had left the building a few minutes later and taken the road for Basel, removing their disguise at the first opportunity. It had all been perfectly simple. I was forced to admire the cunning and audacity of a man who had com- mitted a murder but the day before, arraying himself as a member of the police force and going to search through the effects of his victim. Throughout the narrative I had been busily engaged on the cold ham and sausages. 1 loathe leberwurst, but I felt that Karl probably had a keen appetite for it, so I worked away until T had finished the plate, endeav- oring to look as though I relished the vile stuff. Now that I had secured the docu ment I was filled with a sense of quiet exhilaration. The journey was nearing its end. Neither Schrecker- mann nor Fritz had questioned my impersonation for a moment. I had only to get out of the house, find Gaston and Rehmy, and we should soon all three of us be on our way to Paris. I suitably congratulated Fritz on his success and glanced at my watch. 1t was half-past 8. “If the Herr Major will permit me,"” I said, “I should like to make a few arrangements for my departure,” and se to go. “Have you f-finished your ssup- per?” asked Schreckermann. 1 replied in the affirmative. “Be off with you then,” said Fritz, and please don't murder the chauf- :r,ur”on the way to the railway sta- on. He chuckled at his friendly little Jest at my expense. “I hope it won't be necessary,” T replied, in the manner of a schoolboy squirming under the chaff of his betters. “One moment,” he added, as I turn- ed to leave the room. I paused and he went again to the desk and fumbled among the papers. He returned bearing a sealed en- velope. “Here are your instructions,” he said, “to be opened when you get to Hanover. Don't fail to fulfill them. You may have friends in high quar- ters, but you will kindly conform to your official orders.” “They will be obeyed to the letter," 1 said formally, and clicking my heels 1 turned and left the room. 1 found on reaching the street that the car had disappeared, but there was a servant waiting with my suit- case. I went up to him and took it from his hands.
