HUGHES. i BELGIAN BONDS. » Like France, Belglum is recovering from the effects of the war and the convalescence is slow and painful, marked by relapses. Moreover, prices for Belgian bonds are influenced sympathetically by those for France, “The result is that anywhere from 6.90 10 nearly 7.50 per cent is obtainable on Belgian bonds, four of which, all payable principal and interest in American dollars, are actively traded in on the New York Stock EXxchange. It may be instructive to examine the reasons for the variations in price. Take the 7ls, due 1945, first. These were offered in June, 1920, un- der an agreement whereby the king- 2gm of Belgium covenants to pay annually not less than $2,300,000 to be applied to the redemption by lot of not less than $2,000,000 principal amount of bonds at 115 and this an- nual payment is sufficient to retire the entire issue at this price of 115 by maturity. Here we have another one of those provisions which operate 1o hold up the market price, for holders always have the chance that their bonds will be called for pay- ment at this substantial premium, perhaps next year and perhaps later, but in_any case, before 1945. The Belgian 8s, due 1941, also have & sinking fund suficient to purchase each year $1,500,000 principal amount at a price not more than 107%, with the further provision that ‘if bonds are not purchasable at this Iyure, beginning in 1926, they shall be drawn for redemption by lot also & 107%. Examination of the market prices shows that they are controlled by these redemption clauses. i (Copyright, 1825.) very BY WILLIAM ¥. HEFFERNAN. This means a cut of §1.30 a ton from 1923, as quo- tatlons were lowered 80 cents last season. Declining prices for pig iron in late weeks have caused a gen- eral weakness in the Northern ore markets and many Northern pro- ducers have foreseen the necessity for the price reduction. A year ago at this time pig fron prices were 50 cents to $1 a ton higher than they are today and mine owners have made strenuous efforts|| to avoid further reduction. As now established Cleveland ore prices are fixed at $4.40 a ton for non-Bessemer old range and $4.25 for non-Bessemer Mesabi range. According to the Cleveland shipping || and steel men the lowest estimate there of the ore movement for the season s 63,000,000 tons. This com- pares with a total handled fn 1924 of 42,000,000 tons. This will keep the ore fleet busy, but vessel earnings are not expected to be in direct ratio, since the low draft rate, necessitated by the condition of lake waters, will prevent the handling of full cargoes. Short Cargoes Necessary, Vessels are not permitted to be loadéd o that they draw more than 181 feet of water, which, vessel men say, means short cargoes. The cut in ore prices has had some effect on the Buffalo pig iron market, but, so far as can be learned, the price of eastern Pennsylvania product , has not. been affected Birmingham, Pueblo and the Utah producers are entirely unworried and are turning out pig iron as fast as equipment and working forces will allow.
