HERNDDN, Va, March 26— Double funeral services were held vesterday for Nelson Potter, 76 years old, and his brother, Wil- liam H. Potter, 79, who died Sun- day, six hours apart They were veterans of the Unlon army in the Civil War, the elder having lost his right leg in the service. The funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church by the Rev. George W. Popkins of ‘Washington, D. Finally, discovering she was apparently no longer the favorite of the potentate, she escaped through the ald of a po nan and sought Baula’s pro- tey 1 . the girl added, she was threatened with dire punishment un- less she returned to the Maharaja’s establishment, and there were several attempts at abduction, which oulmi- nated in the affair of January 13, in which Baula was killed length. PARIS, March 26.--The French birth rate continues to decline, ac- cording to the vital statistics for last year, just completed. The births numbered 752,101, and the deaths 679,885, the excess of births over deaths being 72,216, as compared with 95,000 for the preceding year. Dr. Variot, authority on vital statistics, remarks that but for the population of the recovered province of Alsace- Lorraine, where large families are still usual, the situation would be much worse. Accordin to figures gathered by him, the number of births steadlly in- creased in France from the begin- ning of the nineteenth century and reached their peak during the second empire, with more than 1,000,000 an- nually. After the war of 1870 they began to drop. Thus, in 1876 there were 967,000 births; in 1886, 907,000; in 1890, 867,- 000, and in 1907, 774,000.
