By the Associated Press. LONDON, March 10.—Another act in the notorious Sir Hari Singh scandal was concluded yesterday when the trial of Willlam Cooper Hobbs, a law clerk, charged with fraudulently ob- taining money from the East Indian prince, ended in a verdict of gullty. Hobbs was sentenced by Judge Avory to two years' imprisonment at hard labor. The jury found Hobbs gullty of charges of conspiracy with Montague Noel Newton and James Charles Ar- thur, who was alde de camp to Sir Hari Singh, to cheat and defraud the prince and with unlawfully receiving checks obtained In pursuance of the conspiracy. The judge previously had withdrawn from the jury a count against Hobbs of actually stealing the checks. The most striking features of the latest stage of the trial were the severe strictures passed on Newton, who at the trial of the suit of C. E. Robinson against the Midland Bank for money deposited in the institu- tion by the prince to his order to hush up a scandal growing out of the prince’s attentions to Mrs. Robinson, detailed his share in the conspiracy to extort money from the prince. Sir Henry Curtls Bennett, counsel for Hobbs, referring to Newton, sald “I venture to think no bigger or more clever scoundrel ever stood in the witness box to glve evidence on behalf of the crown than Newton. ® ® ® That perjurer, forger and black- maller is the plvot upon which the whole case against Hobbs rests.” In summing up, Judge Avory said: “Many hard things have been said against Newton. I am not going to say they were too hard, but at least he has one merit—he does not pre- tend to be other than he {s." Newton sat in the courtroom un- moved while the judge mads his com- ment. — .
