N STOGK NARSET Favorable Steel Tonnage R?' port Fails to Stop Heavy Selling Wave. BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, March J0.—The stock market today pursued a very irregu- Jar course, with the tendency toward Jower prices much of the time. The United States Steel Corporation’s un- filled tonpage figures, which came out at noon, exceeded the expecta- tions of the majority, and so far as the volume of new business was con- cerned, made a favorable impression. The figures dieclosed an increase of nearly 250,000 tons, which was larger than the January gain. Steel common became more active at higher prices immediately after ~the an- nouncement, and a partial rally oc- curred in the general body of stocks. 0f1 Shares Thrown Over. elling continued in the oil shares h:xus»‘nt the fact that rumors of a further increase in mid-continent crude oll prices were not borne out. Pacific Oil dropped below 60, where it was off more than 5 points from the season’s high. Phillips Petroleum was down more than a point and Pan-American B was heavily offered California Petroleum received better support than most of the other mem- hers of the group on the decline. The reputed pool in Independent Oil and Gas took no vigorous stand against the general market tendency. The recent bull campaign in Texas Pacific Coal and Oil had a rather melancholy sequal, as the stock sold around 18, where It was dewn 5 points from the late high. Studebaker Is Strong. Studebaker was strong for a time around 45, but it had no effect upon the other motors. Plerce Arrow preferred dropped 1';. and while support W given General Motors under 73 it was not espectally effective. Maxwell Motors iesues were strong for a_time, but gave way later. American Bosch Magneto was oft over 17 points from where it #old during the wild speculative orgy of Saturday, January 3 Shares of the electrical equipment manufacturers stood out _strongly. Whenever. the rest of the market gave them a chance General Electric and Al- lis Chalmers were bid up. The latter was selling close to top figures. St. Paul Again Sold. Reports of new banking interests having entered into the St. Paul situation did not prevent further heavy selling of the stocks. But the same support made its appearance in St. Paul preferred around 20 as has been shown in every occasion recent- 1y when the stock has been weak. Other Northwestern ralls were lower. Chicago and Northwestern was off 3 points from last week's best in recognition of the fact that there is little chance of an increase in the present $4 dividend. Union Pacific dropped below 148 and New York Central was frecly supplied under 121, Medium and low-priced rails of the type of Wabash Missouri- Kansas-Texas and the Kansas City- Southern were all So was St St. Louls-Southwestern. When directors of the Ludlum Steel did nothing more than declare thei Gajlahan Zinc dividend at the rate of 32, it broke|cal Pate (1% ) up the bull movement in that stock.|calif Pet pt (7). Today a further sharp reduction occur- red. Allis Chalmers distinguished itselt today the gelling movement in the general list got fully under way Allis Chal- mers turned back under the pressure of realising sales, but this irregu- larity was followed by further sup- port. The gossip about the company was highly favorable, satisfactory earnings, the strong financial position and the likelihood of higher divi- dends. Wilson Stocks Steady. Wilson & Co. stocks paid little at- tention to the comment on the forth- coming reorganization plan. It was reported that an assessment on the preferred and common stocks and an adjustment of $52,000,000 debt would be involved. For each share of present preferred stockholders are expected to be assessed $15 and re- ceive $15 par value in new debenture notes and 17 shares new common. For each share of present common stockholders, it is anticlpated, will be assessed 35 and receive $5 par value in new debenture notes and half-share of new common. MARKET CLOSES WEAK. Recognized Leaders Continue to Lose Their Ground. By the Associnted Press. NEW YORK, March 10.—Publica- tion of a favorable United States Steel Corporation tonnage report and a brisk rally in wheat, based on a bullish Government crop estimate, were ignored by today’s stock mar- ket, which continued to lose ground in reflection of speculative uneasi- ness over the money situation. Total sales approximated 1,500,000 shares. The closing was weak. The Pressed Steel Car issues were marked up 3 to 5 points in the late trading, but the recognized leaders continued under pressure, closing near the low levels of the day Markets at a Glance NEW YORK—Stocks lower; standard yails yield to selling pressure. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 10.—Renewed selling, of the short-term St. Paul bonds was the feature of today's market. The 4s of 1925 were offered in large blocks at one time down 2 points from Monday's close and at a new low for the year, There were also large offerings for future dellvery, mostly 30 daye, at even lower prices, the operation corresponding to & short sale {n stock. Throughout this sell- ing the longer maturitles of the St. Paul were fairly steady. Another Feature. Elsewhere in the list the feature was St. Louis-San Franclsco prior lien A 4s, which were very strong above 75 for the first time. Trans- actions were on a large scale. Other St. Louis-San Francisco issues did not share this improvement. I. G.
