NEW YORK, March 9.—The profes- wional judgment on today's market was that it was “full of stocks” from start to finish. Prices fell away read- 11y, and, with few exceptions, no at- tempts were made to theow in fresh pupport. Active industrials of the typs of Baldwin Locomotive and American Can were freely supplied, snd the whole list reflected heavy rofit-taking. P the ofl stocks were influenced by the fact that reports of another in- crease in crude oil prices -were not berne out in the over Sunday news. Phillips Petroleum sold off over a point and Houston nearly two points. California Petroleum after declining more than a point encountered fresh buying, and the market for Independ- ent Oil and Gas, under the Durant yrestige, appeared to be still fairly well tn hand. The 1924 report of the Texas Co., showing over $4 a share esrned under difficult conditions, made & favorable impression. Steel Shares Draggy. Reading of the latest advices from the steel manufacturing centers was not calculated to encourage bullish sentiment on the steel shares. Beth- lehem Steel made a new low for the vesr as it broke 45. Crucible was of over a point. Expectations of in- crease in untilled orders of the United States Steel Corporation in Tuesday's monthly statement did not prevent bids for the stock being fully supplied, most ‘of the time at some- what lower prioes. As the result of the reopening of the tax question and the charge made representatives of the Couzens investigating committee, Atlantic Guit and West Indles had another bad break. Bunched sales appeared at the opening at 31, against 35%, the Saturday close, the low price meaning a loss of 10 points from last Week's top. Much Selling in Rails. Realizing sales were heavy in most the rails. Baltimore and Ohio, &round 81, was off three points from dast week’s high, and Atchison was off six points from its top. Kansas City Southern dropped 11, and Rock Jsiand was down four points from vecent high figures. Texas and Pa- cific, around 52, had lost six points from its best. The ease with which Northwestern ralls went down estab- lished the point that their recent up- turn had been due to short covering. Extreme weakness in Miami Copper was regarded as making it almost certzin that the dividend was gone. Savage Arms came down below par. Woolen Sensitive. Amerlcan Woolen was sentitive to reports that the woolen industry had not sustained the improvement that was talked about a few weeks ago. Hudson Motor made a good showling, but the feature of the motor group ‘was the Maxwell issues, which were bid up again on favorable reports of earnings. American Safety Razor, on 10p of last week's advance of 9 points, was bid up another 3 points. Some attention has been attracted recently to the capital stock of the Homestake Mining Company, which has been quoted around 45. There @re 251,160 shares outstanding, with no preferred stock or bonds. Home- stake is a producer of gold, with mines located at Lead, S. D. Regular dividends at the rute of $6 a year, &8s well as an extra $1, are being paid. From 1813 to 1916, inclusive, $8.80 per share was paid each year. The lowest the stock sold in those four years was 100, whereas today it was quoted well below 50 and pays $7. At the present rate of opera- tions the ore reserves .would indi- cate a life to the mine of about 10 years. MARKET CLOSES HEAVY, of Blight Rally in Some Issues Just Before Gong Sounds. CHICAGO, March 8. —After a gener- ally steady start, the hog trade showed weakness today and some sales were lower. A week ago today best hogs went at 12.75. Cholce lots s0ld at 14.00a14.25 from the opening of the market today. About 151,000 hogs were reported at combined prin- cipal markets, Sales were as much as +25 cents lower late in the session. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star, NEW YORK, March 9.—In today's bond market & sharp line was drawn between securities within and with- out the “legal” class. Bonds which the law permit: Ings banks to buy were in de: excess of supply. The banks were asking for offerings. This condition was reflected In prices, as, for in- stance, when Atchison general 4s at 90 made a new high for the year and New York Central 5s sold at 101, up three-quarters from Saturday's close. Other lilustrations of the same sort of strength were found In Southern Pacific refunding 4s and Baltimore and Ohlo first 4s. Market Is Reactionary. Outside these selected bonds the market was reactionary. Quotations were not materlally lower, mainly because bonds were not pressed for sale, One exception to the general trend was St. Louis-San Francisco prior lien “A" 4s, which at one time g0t up to 75, a new high. New York Central s, however, dropped below 114, and there was further selling of Missouri-Kansas-Texas adjustments below 86. Explanation for the recent weakness in I. G. N. adjustments was afforded by the declaration today of only a 4 per cent interest disburse- ment for the year. Earnings, it had been thought, would justify at least 5 per cent.
