BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK. February 24.—Trad- ing proceeded quletly at the start of the week’s business in bonds. Reports were remewed of an ad- vance' in the rediscount rate of the New York Federal Reserve Bank, but they were without effect upon Govern- ment bonds or the high-grade rails. The demand for new offerings con- tinued brisk as was evidenced by the prompt sale of $8,000,000 Pennsylvania Power ahd Light first and refunding of 1953 at prices to yield over 5.30 per cent. The market for other re- cent new offerings was firm, if rather inactive. ¥ New York Central Fives. Special strength was New York Central bs, which at 101 made a new high for the year January this bond sold below par, which, however, was an unusually low price for securities legal for sav- ings banks in this State, In speculative rails the dominating influence was still merger rumors. One of these reports was that the Missouri-Kansas-Texas was interest- ed in the Chicago and Alton, and an- other that the Pennsylvania was anxious to econtrol the Chicago and Eastern 1llinois. Still another r port to the effect that a new bankin Broup was to intervene in the St Paul situation brought about a rally in the 4s of 1925. At 68 they were up points from the extreme low of turday. Other St. Paul bonds, however, were unaffected and the P get Sound 4s at one time were down over a point. exhibited by In Sugar Bonds Stromg. Sugar bonds were strong, in sym- pathy with sugar stocks, especially the Cuba Cane Sugar 7s and 8s and Eastern Cuba 73%s. Cuba Ciane S$s at 102 equaled their high of the year. Industrial bonds as a group, on the other hand, were dull or heavy Marine 6s dropped below 90. Foreign bonds also dragged. garian 73%s were lower and there was no significant improvement in the French issues. VANCOUVER, B. C., February 24.— Jerome D. Greenme of Lee, Higginson & Co., New York bankers, who ar- rived today from Japan, said bond deals were being negotiated, but were not vet completed, for the issuance of loans of about $45,000,000 to three Japanese hydroelectric companies by Lee, Higginson & Co. and other New York firms. The firms he named, all in Tokio, are the Daido Electsic Company,’ the Toho Hydroelectric Company and the Ushawaga Hydro- electric Company. Mr. Greene said negotiations would be continued in New York and possi- bly Washington. He said several prominent American bankers are in Japan discussing investments. The Russo-Japanese pact, recently con- cluded, will not interfere with Ameri- can investments in Japan, according to Mr. Greene's opinion.
