SHARP ADVANGES HEAVY REALIZNG Distribution in Parts of List, While Other Shares Shoot Upward. BY STUART P. WEST, Dispatch to The Star. W YORK, January 20.—In spite of the impression of strength created by the continued advance in the oil shares and in the rise in motors, the #tock market today was highly ir- regular. There were a number of rather violent advances among in- dustrial specialti but Jjust as many weak spots among recent favorites. One of the important contributing factors in this connection was the heaviness of Steel common, the less favorable news regarding the steel fndustry. Under cover of another up- ward movement in the oils profit-tak- Ing went on actively and distribution was made easier in certain directions. The taking up of the moters in the afternoon coincided with a check to the upturn in the oils, and it appeared that traders were shifting from the Jatter into the automobile and acces- pory group. Anothem Advance in Oil. An advance of nts a !HII‘TC‘ in Gulf Coast Crude fitted' in with Wall Street’s view that oll prices Rkre on the upgrade. The announce- sent stimulated speculation in the oll group, and nearly al ptocks made new highs. Yepresenting the company w be one of the chief beneficiaries, ran wup very sharply. Large stop orders ffor short account were in the mer. et for Pan-American B above 70, ®mnd the execution of these carried the stock up a point further. Texas Company, Standard Oil of New Jer- wev, Barnsdall A, California_ Pe- troleum, Phillips Petroleum, Inde- pendent Oil and Gas, Pure Ofl, Asso- ciated Oil and Louisiana Oil and Re- fining were all in demand. Pacific ©il, the leader on the previous days, ran into heavy profit-taking around 64, Mack Trucks Jump. It was Mack Trucks comm & rather sensational jump, which re- aroused interest in the motor section. Those usually well informed on Mack Truck: affairs were not in sympathy with such a violent rise, ying that there was no immediate rea n so far as dividend prospects were concerned But the way the stock went in a brief space from around 122 to above 130 {ndicated that there could not have been much, if any, distribution of Yhe big holdings of the stock into the hands of the public. White Motor, moving with Mack Trucks, cr ed 75 again. The buying spread to Stude- baker, which sudden moved forward over a point. It also took in the Max- well Motors shares, Jordan Motor and Stewart Warner. Stock Jumps 50 Points. The spectacular features among Bpecialties imcluded S. S. Kresge, which jumped 50 points on the news of the 50 per cent stock dividend de- clared. The astonishing rise in the Commercial Solvents shares continued. There were definite rumors that Corn Products Refining was after the Com- anercial solvents because the business of the two companies along certain lines would work in very well to- gether. ome Missour, New Hav subsided later. further buying occurred in Kansas and Texas and in n early in the day, but it Colorado and South- ern = a new high above 49. The experts have figured that this road Is earning on its stock nearly as much as Southern Pacific, that is, between 10 and 11 per cent. COAL PRICES SHOW SLGHT REDUETIONS Fuel Demand Less Firm Dur- ing Week, Market Sum- mary Reveals. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 29.—Coal Age Feports the market today as follows: The expected sag in the bituminous coal business, with the moderation in weather conditions and continuation of heavy production, has appeared, as was inevitable. Domestic coal prices are in dificulties in the Middle Wes and even steam buyers are apathetic, which has caused screenings to slump elightly. Though a slight car short- age is developing in the Kentucky flelds, production is close to record figures, but as demand Is not keeping pace, the market is lacking in the strength that was in evidence not long ago. Eastern Trade Is Firmer, prices have been ad- England, but as there nd it is question- Smokeless vanced in New 8 no greater den able as to whether the increases will hold, though it is worthy of note that some of the mills are increasing op- erations. Activity ymewhat more brisk in the New York and Philadel- phia markets, prices sticking at pra tically the old levels, however. Bus fess at Baltimore continues to be a disappointment, even the export trade being dormant Without showing any particularly high spots, the anthracite market has been holding its recent gains, with occasional spurts. Egg is beginning to show some signs of life, though chestnut continues to lead in demand, followed by stove. Steam sizes show the biggest increase in demand, the supply having been curtailed by the strike. Prices Slightly Lower. Coal Age index of spot prices of bituminc coal registered another slight recession during the last week, standing on January 26 at $1.73 the rresponding price for which is $2.09, compared with $1.74 and $2.11, respectively, on January 19. There was a reaction in activity at Hampton Roads during the last week, dumpings of coal for all accounts during the period ended January 22 totaling 40 net tonms, compared with 421,057 tons dumped during the preceding week. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. NEW YORK, January 29 (Special).— Prices ruled firm throughout the bond list again today. ‘While trading interest w: centered on speculative descriptions, caere was a good demand for investment issues as well. For the most part this in- quiry was for bonds just below the so- called gilt-edge class. New York Cen- tral 5s crossed par and were the lead- ers in this group. Southern Railway general 4s, at 76, were higher than at any time in the past year. The re- turn of more than 5% per cent, with the established earning power of the Southern Railway, has attracted in- vestment accumulation. Other rallroad bonds in the same general grade, such as Kansas City Southern refunding Gs, Baltimore and Ohio convertible 4%s and St. Louls- Southwestern consolidated 4s were all well taken. Hudson and Manhattan income 58 were the most prominent among the tractions, running up above 71 for the first time. The report that the Pennsylvania railroad might be in- terested in acquiring control helped along the movement. The convertible ofl bonds agaln went along with their respective stocks. - Skelly Oil 63%s and Sinclair 6s were conspicu- ous for their gains. Among the rails International Great Northern adjustments continued their advance, selling above 71 and at a new high. Earnings are now at the rate of 9 per cent on these bonds, and when the directors meet next month it is expected that not less than 5 per cent will be paid. Thers has been some talk that the Gulf Coast lines were interested In acquiring these bonds. Foreign bonds were fairly firm. The Mexican issues moved up on renewed hopes of the resumption of debt service. City of Montevideo 7s gained on small transactions. Day's New Issues. New offerings included $3,000,000 Dierks Lumber and Coal of Kansas City 5% per cent serial notes to yield from 5.50 to 6 per cent; $5,000,000 Pacific Steamship Marine equipment 6145 to vield from 5 to 6.75 per cent. and $1,600,000 United States Cold Stor- age Co. of Chicago first mortgage 6s at par. NEW YORK, January 29.—The turnover of more than 200,000 shares of Pacific Oil in the last two days has revived rumors in the financial district that the company was being acquired by the Standard Oil Com- pany of California, which owns about 20 per cent of its outstanding capi- tal stock. Another version was that Pan-American Petroleum was about to acquire the company. None of the reports, however, had official substantiation. DIVIDENDS. Pay- Stock of ord. b 1 Corporation. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, January 29.—Influenced by a 10-cent smash in wheat prices at Winnipeg, a result of heavy sell- ing out on the part of holders, the market here underwent a violent set- back today in the early dealings. The feverish buying which has been the rule in Chicago of late continued, however, to be of such extraordinary volume that the extreme break here limited to about 4 cents a bushel, with quick rebounds of more than 2 cents in some cases. The fact that prior to the weakness at Winnipeg the Liverpool market today was un- responsive to yesterday's advance here counted as a decided handicap to proponents of higher prices in Chi- cago. Opening figures, which ranged from 1 to 3% lower, with May 2.02 to 2.03% and July 169 to 1.71, were fol- lowed by further losses in the de- ferred deliveries, and then by raliies all around. Corn and oats were governed chiefly by the action of wheat. Speculators, though, were aggressive buyers of corn on the downturns in price. After opening at % to 1% lower, May 1.31% to 1.32%, corn fluctuated rapidly, but kept near to the initial range. Oats started at a shade to 1 down, May 59% to 60%, and later held rela- tively steady. COTTON QUOTATIONS MOVE BUT LITTLE Early Advance Later Offset by Considerable Selling of July Contracts. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 20.-—The cot- ton market opened steady today at an advance of 2 to 9 points in re- sponse to steady Liverpool cables and bullish overnight Southern advices. Failure of the weather map to show any rain or give promise of immediate precipitation in the Southwest also was a factor which probably led to some buying of new crop positions. The advance to 24.05 for May and 24.25 for July met considerable realiz- ing, however. There also seemed to be a little hedge selling with the re- sult that prices soon reacted to about yesterday's closing quotations. This carried May off to 23.95 and the mar- ket was about net unchanged to 3 points higher at the end of the first hour. New Orleans Quotations NEW ORLEANS, January 29.—Cot- ton futures opencd steady.
