MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.. January 27. —Construction of a bLuilding has be- Eun on top of the new Nicollet Hotel to house the new broadcasting studio for the Gold Medal station, WCCO. Washburn-Crosby Company, owners of the gtation, announced that this studio will be completed late in Feb- ruary, simultaneously with the com- pletion of the new 5,000-watt super- power broadcasting station which s being constructed 18 miles northwest of St. Paul and Minneapolls. A one-story building, constructed on the roof of the Nicollet Hotel be- tween the penthouses and on its two wings, will be used to house the stu- dios, and studios themselves will be of a design unusual among American broadcasting stations. Cost of ereeting the Minneapolis and St. Paul studios will be met by the Washburn-Crosby Company, under thelr agreement with the Minneapolls Civic and Commerce Association and St. Paul Assoclation, by which Min- neapolis business men pledged $30,000 D. 0, TUESDAY, JANUARY 27, 1925. FIFTEEN MINUTES OF RADIO EACH DAY BY JOSEPH CALCATERRA, Noted Authority on Radio. Al Rights Reserved. Reproduction Prohibited. WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES IN A REFLEX CIRCUIT. What goes on behind the scenes in a reflex circuit. The reflex circuit, first brought to light by Schloemilk and Van Bronk, is one of the most unique circuits now in existence and shares with the neutrodyne and the superheterodyne the distinction of being one of the triumvirate of what might be termed the most important and favorite cir- cuits of today. ‘While it was invented as far back as 1914 by the men mentioned and perfected later by Marius Latour, the circuit did not become a popular one until about 1921 and 1922, The trouble with the circults of earlier days was due to the fact that special apparatus, especially suited for such circuits, had not yet been perfected and though the principles of the circults were developed to the extent that the fundamental actions were understood and the practicabil- ity of the circuits demonstrated, it frequency of a type which will affect a reproducer such as a pair of phones. The detecting means can be a vac- uum tube of the standard three-ele trode type now used; a two-electrode tube, commonly known as a Fleming valve; an ordinary form of galena and copper crystal detector and by any of the other means usually employed for detection. While it would seem that the use of a tube for this purpose would be the ideal arrangement, there are difficulties in getting a tube to work efficiently as a detector in this type of circuit, while the crystal de- tector circult gives very good results at a very low cost both as to first cost and upkeep. WTAM, Cleveland, may have been the station. Shenandoah, Iowa, is 820 miles from Washington. The call let- tion there is KFNF. It transmits on a 266-meter wave band. Radfo Editor: For the information of W. E rave advised that station WCEE cullar characteristics of reflex cir- cults, and steps wers taken to de- velop special apparatus to bring out the best that could be obtained from the undoubted possibilities of this new cirouit. Superior Eficiency Giv: The Tesult has been that, tube for tube, circuits of this type will give more efficlency than any other type of circuit known today. The proof that such reflex circuits have fnherent in them marked char- acteristics that make for tube efll- clency and economy is shown by the fact that most of the recent new cir- ocuits, such as the regenofiex, the reflex neutrodyne, the Roberts cf cult, the Browning Drake and many other new circuits, employ this prin- ciple. It would seem difficult to under- | stand how a single tube could amplify more than once, espectally since it is generally known that radio waves in- terfere with one another to a greater or lesser extent when they are pres- ent together in the same cireuit. This would be the case if both fre- quencles wers separated by only a short distance on the frequency scale. When the wave length or frequemcy of the two or more currents are sepa- rated by a sufficient span, the inter- ferences between the two Waves can be neglected, and a radio frequency current and an audio frequency cur- rent can both be present in the same circuit without causing any trouble or interference between the two. Amplification Divided. Amplification in radio circuits is di- vided into two classes. In the first case amplification of the current flow- | ing in a circuit and caused by the flow of current in the antenna circuit by a passing wave Is effected at radio trequencies, while in the other case amplification is effected at audio fre- quency. Radio frequencies are arbi- trarily fixed as those which do not affect a reproducer—that is, they are vibrations which are not sensible to | the human ear, while audio frequen- | cles are those which are perceptible to the ear. Of course these vary with different persons, but radlo frequen- cles include, by agreement, frequen- | cles above 10,000 cycles per second, while audio frequencies include those below 10,000 cycles per second. So far we have considered only the schedules at WOC, Davenport Under the arrangements which are now being contemplated all forenoor schedules will be the broadcasting of market, rep: will also be done away with Those in charge of the Davenport | station feel that the complete mar- ket service being offered by Chicago and other Midwest broadcasters justifies this change, and WOC will devote its efforts to broadcasting of aking educational material and home hints and evening programs of an entertaining and instructive nature.
