Cancellation of previously re ported plans for connecting the big alrship by radio with broad- casting stations at Washington, New York and Providence was due WASHINGTON, D. ¢, WEDNESDAY, JAN UARY 21, 192 FIFTEEN MINUTES OF RADIO EACH DAY BY JOSEPH CALCATERRA, Noted Authority on Radio. All Rights Resorved. Reproduotion Prohibited. 1t you will compare the diagram shown below with the one shown with yesterday's article, you will see the actual similarity of the relay circuit with the circult of a-tube amplifier circult. I have changed the circait of a tube amplifier circuit slightly merely fon the sake of making the relation between the two circuits more evi- dent and easy to understand. We will number the antenna, grid varfous pitches, The human volce, with its variations of pitch and strength, does exactly what the vart- able resistance and the changeable alternator would do. So far, then, we have accounted for two of the elements of yesterday's stmple relay circuit, namely, the source of current in the control, cir- cult as the energy received from the broadcasting. station, and the control key In the form of the broadcaster’s Comparison of Aerials. A loop aerfal picks up the least amount of energy of all aerials. An indoor aerial about 20 fect long and of one wire will plck up more than a loop, while an outdoor aerial will gather more than the other two, and a long aerlal more than a short one, but the long one also picks up other disturbances which are objectionable. Radio Editor: Your column is very interesting and I enjoy reading the experiences of others. T have a one-tube regenera- tive set with no amplification, but have & good aerial and ground. Up to date I have heard 52 stations plainly and clearly, and on New Year eve heard three celebrations—local, Chicago and Denver. 1 get numerous stations even when local is on I am well satisfied with my set, but I think it must be working overtime because when I put the phones to my ears the other evening 1 heard local broadcast plainly without the A anfl B batteries being attached. S50 I then took out the tube and the music con- tinued to come in as plainly as ever. Can you explain this?—L VOGELS- BERGER. Your set is indesd remarkable. If it was a reflex this apparent phe- nomenon probably could be explained, and plate circuits in today's dlagramvoice or instrument, which acts as a 1,2 and 3, respectively. The source of energy in the con- trolling or grid circuit 2, In place of being a battery, as was the case in yesterday's diagram, is now the re- celved energy present in the antenna cirouit and transferred to the grid cirouit 2 by the induction action of colls A and B. The recelved current of the antenna ciroult, and consequently the current in the grid circult, however, is hot a constant quantity flowing at greatest strength when the circuit is closed and stopping entirely when the cir- cuit is open, as is the case when the key A is closed or opened, respec- tively, as shown in yesterday's dia- gram, but {s a ourrent which is changing i{p strength and in its fre- quency characteristics in accord with the current produced at the transmit- ting station by the action of the voice currents. Variable Resistance. A similar effect, as far as strength of current, could be produced in the grid circuit by introducing a variable resistance C, which can be changed quickly between certain limits, also by the introduction of an nator or oscillator D, whose fre- quency’ can also be changed at will or as required, to produce notes of combination of a varlable Tesistance regulating the current flow or inten- sity of the current and the change- able alternator, which governs the pitch of the sound. Action in the Tube. ‘The action. which takes place in the vacuum tube between the grid and the fllament elements of the tube is similar to the action of the electro- magpet oentrol exerted by cofl C, cors D, armature ¥, «pring G and con- tact H of yesterday's relay circuit. The actlon in the production of negative and positive charges on the grid of the tube has the same effect in controlling the amount of current flowing in thé plate circuit 3 as the action of the electromagnet assem- bling has fn controlling the flow of the auxiliary current flowing in ecir- cult 2 of yesterday's diagran The difference lies in the fact that in the tube cirecait the action i§ not a elmple make-and-break action, but a faithful following of the variations produced in the grid cireuit. The actlon in circult 2 of yester- day’'s clrcult, in which ar ture L is attracted to and released from the magnet core, finds a counterpart in the attraction and release of the din- phragm of the phones the magnet E. Deaver, Colo, could hear “The Magic Flute” on a FADA Neutrodyne —his trained ear would approve the tonal fidelity to the original in his famous old opera. ' The peculiar charm of this woodwind instru- ment is caught in all its purity by the famous Fada Neutrodyne. With equal tonal truth, Fada reproduces the deep rolling bass of the pipe-organ. , The Fada Neutrodyne has the range of the 88-key pianoforte. McCormack’s pure tenor, Bori’s delicious soprano, create the illusion of standing beside the actual artists when you hear them on a Fada set.. Bass and baritone voices are reproduced with equal fidelity. Nor does Fada create those raucous distortions that have kept many dis- criminating folks from investing in radio. Fada selectivity is one of its chief charms. Turn the dials to predetermined numbers, and in rolls the very station you want to hear— provided the waves from that station are reaching your neighborhood. Fada also excels in distance and volume. In short, Fada is radio at its very, very best. There are six models to meet every taste and pocketbook. $75 to $270. Fada is adapted to either dry-cell or storage-battery tubes, and either indoor or outdoor aerial. Hear Fada. It will be a revelation in radio! Buy your Fada now and be ready to hear the world’s famous artists when- ever they sing or play for you over the radio. F. A.D. ANDREA, INC. 1551 JEROME AVENUE, NEW YORK Yeme.
