Market. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 17.—Prices closed the week in the bond market generally higher except for Libertys and the savings bank rails. Good second-grade Issues ylelding around 6 per cent were in demand. An ex- ample {s Missouri Pacific 6s, which sold above par for the firet time, and such bonds as Tennessee Electric Power 6s and North American Edison 65 and 6%s. The class of bonds now coming Into favor are those which are not quite good enough for the very conservative, and too slow mov- ing for the speculatively minded. V. $. Bonds Irregular. United States Government bonds and the high-grade rafls were irreg- ular today, but on the week the Libertys show small declines in re- sponse to repeated predictions - of higher money. For the same reason there has been an unusually good de- mand this week for short-term secu- ites. Pennsylvania Railroad _col- lateral 7s of 1930, selling on a 5 per cent basis, is a tyve of this bond. Another raflroad bond of fairly short term which has had a better market is Colorado and Southern 4%s. This kind of investment buying has like- wise shown itself in United Kingdom 518 of 1937, which, at 1061, have this week equaled their record high for all time. In this case the matur- ity return is under 5 per cent, but higher than that afforded by first mortgage domestie rails. Forelgn Group Steady. In general, the foreign group has done better this week. The French issues have dragged, eclally the 8s, which fell below 103 for the first time on this movement, but most of the list was higher. The feature among European bonds has been the City of Copenhagen 515, with an ad- vance of more than two points, bused probably on the fact that drawings by the sinking fund for redemption at par to the amognt of $750,000 an- nually will begin $n July 1 next. Among the speculative rails today's leader was Chicago Great Western 4s, which at 613 were selling at 1% points above the low of the week The strongest members of this group on the week, however, have been the Seaboard Air Line Issues, all of which, except the adjustments, have made substantial gains. In tractions B. M. P, consistently strong at ord, above 83, and s come which are week offerings this week have been mall. The largest was per cent three-year dison Electric Co. of 68 have been a new higi s revival into Chicago up over a $30,000,000 41 notes of the Boston on a 4.
