BY ORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispateh to The Star, NEW YORK, January 3.—Bonds closed the week with prices firm and the speculative rails and forelgn ls- sues most active. For a long time now the so-called “junior” rails have | been neglected, but today these high- yielding obligations were taken up. Missour!, Kansas and Texas adjust- ments was one of the most prominent, crossing 79, where It was up over a point on the week and within a frac- ition of its record high for all time. The New Haven bonds were all strong, the 6s of 1948 going above 87, where they were selling higher than at any time in 1924, At the same time. the 78 crossed 97, approximating their record during the past year. New Haven Bonds Favored. Buying of the New Haven bonds was based on reports of favorable progress in the placing of the pro- posed new refunding 6 per cent issue. Earnings have also shown gratifying improvement in recent months. A strong feature was I G. . adjust- ments above 68, but still most 2 points below the record high. board bonds were firm. On the week all the obligations of this road have made good gains. In the foreign group the recovery which began Friday was maintained. On the week all the Frénch issues, as well as the new German Ts, have lost ground, but the selling which brought this about w; completed before the holiday. A favorable view was taken today of the reported offer, vague though it was, of the French government for the refunding of Ita war debt to the United States. At any rate there was a better market for French bonds. Foreign Group Strong. Hungarian 71%s which held their ground remarkably well all the week, sold again today at their high price. Here it Is the very attractive yleld which is undoubtedly the sustaining influence. Czechoslovak 3s of 1851 were a shade higher today, and the United Kingdom 5348 of 1928 went along with sterling exchange. Strictly investment issues were quiet, but there was no yielding In prices. On the week most of the United States Government loans are tractionally higher, indicating bank- ing opinion that higher money is not In sight. New issues this week totaled only a little over $25,000,000, due to the holiday. ROCKVILLE. ROCKVILLE, Md. January 3 (Spe- cial).—Following a long {llness of a complication of diseases, James P.
