Golden Text—Blessed is the king that cometh in the name of the Lord.—Luke xix.3s. An intensely intefesting series of studles has been assigned for our study during the coming vear. In the lessons for the first quarter we consider the last week of our Lord's ministry and then we shall follow in our lessons the work He continued to do In the spread of Christianity, s outlined In the Acts and Epistles of Paul. More than one-fourth of Luke's gospel is taken up with the record of the Master's final week of service. The three other gospels de- vote fully one-third of their biog- raphies to His last week. This indi- cates the great importance that the evangelists attached to the cruci- fixion and resurrection of Jesus, which marked the culmination of Christ's ministry. The same reason calls for our glving three months' study to the closing period of His ministry. Jesus had realized that the hour of His passion was rapldly approach- ing &s He journeyed toward Jerusa- lem. His disciples had observed the peculiar look in His face as they drew near the nation’s caplital city to participate in the Passover serv- ice. He had planned out His en- trance into Jerusalem, so that it would make plain to the whole people His claim to the kingship From the tragic day when the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel by insisting upon their de- sire to have a king similar to the rulers of other nations, down to the days of Christ, it is evident that the people ed their divine oppor- tunity use of false notions con- cerning the character of their lead- ors. God had selected the Jewish yace. to be the moval and spiritual leaders of the world. They have surpassed all other nations in their moral and spiritual insight. They have been the spiritual pioneers of the world. Some of them had recog- nized in Jesus the leader that the nation had been seeking, but when they determined to make the Master 2 king over the nation by force He refused to allow them to do it. The hour finally came when He forced the by His plans to make a (riumphal entrance into the ecity. jssue Plans for Triumphal Entrance. Washington is turning its thoughts toward March 4, looking forward to a renewal the inaugural cere- noni n o ye past have attracted from all parts of the Nation te the Capital ( to witness he parade aad other ceremonies. (Zech. ix.9.) The vast crowd moving toward the capital recognized the fact that He was proclaiming His authority as the Prince of Peace. There wa in His personality that aroused multitude, who welcomed His leader- ship with enthusiasm and a popular proclamation of their allegiance to the they invoked upon Him blessings and ascribed to Him heavenly honors by their songs of “Hosanna in the hig est” While the leaders in the city political, religious and social life | recognized the significance of the Master’s entrance and of the people’s | praise, they plotted as to the best means of curbing and controlling the popular uprising that threatened their prestige, power and profits. Jesus was moved by the attitude of the people, but He saw clearly that it was too superficial, so when He reached the point on the way from Bethany to Jerusalem where the view of the city breaks upon one’s vision He wept over the city that He loved with all the intensity of a patriot. He saw that before the week passed they would reject Him and crucify Him, but His tears were not due to the trials that their re- jection would bring to Him. He wept because He saw that the city and country, which He loved above all other cities and nations, would miss their greatest opportunity to become the spiritual capital of the world and |a blessing to all mankind by reject- ing Him. Jesus draws near to us in ur day, and frequently we miss be- ing what He would like to have us be by our not knowing the day of His visitation. | His Claims Questioned. Blind prejudice was at work in the city, and the bigots, whose formalism and devotion to the ritual had in their zeal for the letter accuracy been blinded so that they did not under- stand the mysteries of the kingdom, protested to Jesus against His per- mitting the people to praise Him with the finest selections pertaining to the | Messiah to be found in the Scriptures. | They sought to criticize the Master and to instruct Him as to His duty They assumed that the multitude was mistaken in their views of the Lord | They never thought that it was pos- sible for them to be blinded by their prejudice. Jesus refused to rebuke the disciples, as His cynical critics de- cired. He defended them by pointing out that “if these should hold their peace, even the very stones would ery out.” There was an unseen trail of moral and spiritual forces of the universe that had been mustered for | that hour, which could not be silenced if the Master had been willing to | silence the multitude. * While men have feared to face the | discoveries of science, because they have found them, as the Pharisees did, antagonistic to some conception of God's truth that they have beem considering to be the truth when it was only a false interpretation of the Scriptures, there no conftict be- JAMESON-BUILT HOMES! 1700 to 1732 D St. S.E. It was nearly a fortnight sinde we had left Washington, May was more than half over, and we were still short of the fight we wanted. It was nothing much, just a fleck of enamel stuck by some chance in the jet of one of the carbure We could have flown all right, but Milliken and 1 did not want to get away with two cylinders missing. The locating of the trouble was enough to delay our start until long past dawn. It was 7 o'clock before we got over the plateau and, as will be shown later, that fleck of enamel lost us an excellent chance. The Paul da Serra was bare when we flew over it—but it had not an hour and a half before It was the merest chance northward on patrol, for we had c sidered another flight to Cape Verde I lands. Throughout the centuries efforts been made by materialistic ds to check the onward march of Christ's kingdom. Jesus was the con- queror of the nation and of Jerusalem He entered it riding upon the colt. He could have marshaled the forces whose voices proclaimed Him to be the Messiah and been enthroned King. It would meant a revolution. It would have meant that He was a king by and He ought to be a king through peaceful methods and by the exercise of spiritual power, rather than temporal silenced the dignitaries of the temple, entered the city, inspected the temple, purged it of money changers, and returned to Bethany. He had entered as king and had been pro- clalmed as such, but the power was withheld from Him by those intrusted with it. He longs to rule in the hearts of ail men and correct the vils of the moment. Several years &0 an American students’ conference received a cablegram from Japan, saying: “Make Jesus king.” A gen eral returning from herolc service in the World War was heard declaring upon shipboard that “what America needs is a king. She needs Jesus as her king.” Let us, like His unknown friend who intrusted to His service tHe colt, give our all to Him and help by consecrated effort to enthrone Him as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, May every student of this lesson accept Him as their king and by following His commands come to en- joy a prosperous, peaceful and happy New Year in extending His kingdom among men n- . have Our northward course had lasted bare- Iy half an hour, when far below and ahead of us there opened out a situation that had about it more than a touch of drama. Broadside to our path lay a liner, spick and span to the smallest detail in the clear air of the Summer morning, but so far away as to be a miniature ship. Almost nestling on her tall masts | there hovered the long silver shape of an_airship! Dan and Milliken were doing small chores in the cabin behind me, and I found myself calling them—somehow in a whisper. “By Christopher, old man breathed, “we've got ‘em at last!” Milliken's only comment was to pull the breech cover off my gun and set the belt of ehells “Keep high, sir, that was done, quick ! “That's the idea,” T whispered all openings. Action as rehearsed.” “Right, sir!” He and Dan quickly cleared for ac- tiom, while I gave the engine as much gas as it would take. The Merlin leaped forward at dizzying speed. And now we saw what we had previously missed, that we were not alone in our hurry to the scene. From the east raced a war- ship, a plane-carrier we could see from her forward platform, and British from the fleck of white and red at her peak, Her distance from the liner could not have been more than 16 kilometers, and the white surge at her stern and bow showed how quickly the distance was being cov- ered. Neither the airship nor the cruiser, I felt certain, had spotted the Merlin. If the cruiser sent up a plane, we would have to be spry to et in the first shot. “Stations, boy!” T velled, then, for I saw the airship begin to rise from the masts of the liner. “I'll dive be- low her, Milliken.
