TACOMA, December 13.—A great fund, ultimately to amount to $100,- 000,000, is being built up for the schools of the State of Washington. It is called “the permanent school fund” and is protected by law so that it can never be touched; the inter- est alone will be used to help main- tain the schools. The fund now amounts to more than $23,000,000,000 and i3 invested in bonds. The money has come from the sale of school lands of the State, and only slightly more than one-fourth of the lands have been transferred. These lands, some of them covered with timber as good as can be found in the country, are continually rising in value. Clark V. Savidge, State commissioner of public lands, esti- mates that the school endowment will exceed $100,000,000 when all the lands have been sold. The State has reserved all mineral, gas and oil rights that may be in- volved, and this is expectdd to be a source of large revenue to the schools of the future. SOCIAL AGENCIES ASK MORE DONATIONS Car Needed for Nurse and Concrete Floor in Children’s Home. Although many of the needs of the Council of Social Agencles have been filled, the Community committes has issued an appeal for a small car for its natal nurse for one hospital, to enable her to carry instruction and care to many more expectant mothers. For this, $500 Is asked, which is need- ed by Christmas. It is explained there are two other needs in two of the children's insti- tutions. A concreted space for roller skating in the home's own play- ground. This space would give hap- piness all the year round to §0 boys and girls and would provide a safe place for skating, which now can be ipdulged in only in the streets. This would cost $300. Another institution where there are 50 children needs a playground swing, which would cost $60 to buy and erect. Any clubs or groups interested in giving to these institutions can learn the names by calling the office of the Councll of Social Agencies, Room 330, Star Bullding, Main 3580, which is the central clearing house for the Com- munity Christmas committee.
