FINANCIAL PARTIAL RECOVERY | AFTER EARLY DROP lleavy Profit Taking and Bear Selling Force Prices Downward. Associated Press. W YORK, November 22 ive profit taking, combined with con- certed bear selling, drove stock prices lower in today's early trading, but subsequent execution of buying or- ders awalting a reaction and renewed accumulation of minor shares brought about a partial recovery. Many leading issues yielded 1 to 2 points on the early wave of sellingy with U. S. Cast Iron Pipe breaking 4 points and Sears Roebuck 6. Prices steadied later as operations for the rise were resumed in special stocks. Rock Island rebounded to a new high level at 46% on buying credited to interests identified with the South- ern Pacific. Wilson & Co. preferred jumped 7 points on reported progress in the reorganjgation of the packing company, while Union Bag and Paper, United Cigar Stores and Pittsburgh and West Virginia mounted 3% to 4% points. The closing was steady. proximated 900,000 shares. LEADERS MARK TIME. Sales ap- 5 S R, Saturday Selling Considered Fairly ‘Well Absorbed. BY STUART P. WEST. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 22.—While the main body of stocks today were following a rahter uneven course, a sufficient number of individual moves among both rails and industrials were in progress on the upside to give the list a strong appearance. There was heavy selling in many directions for the purpose of realizing, but the market bore up well under this prot- it-taking. The recent industrial leaders of the type of United States Steel common were disposed to mark time and the Josses were inconsequential. The sharpest declines occurred in special- ties like Sears Roebuck, but these were not®surprising in view of the cqually sharp gains they had made during the past week or ten days. Railx Again Actual. Buying operation among certain c-priced rails carried Such stocks Rock Island, Pittsburgh and West Virginia, the St. Pauls and New Haven to their highest levels. Most of the olls either held steady or were Inclined upward. Tobacco Products was the feature of the tobacco group, while International Nickel. selling at & new high well above 21, featured the metal share: It was the heavy buying in several of the low-priced ralls which really | led the entire list upward in the sec- ond hour's trading. Rock Island, the §t. Pauls and New Haven were among the best performers in the rallway section. The Street continued to talk mbout prospective dividends &nd merger possibilities. Rock Inland Jump. The feature at the close was the great run-up in Rock Island above 49, which sct in motfon once more! all the old stories about the road being taken over by the Southern Pa- cific. The St. Pauls were very strong at the end, and the big pool reputed to be operating In International Nickel suddenly got busy with its £pecialty. The close was strong in the leaders of the list, but with prices | clsewhere rather varfable. 1o Markets ‘at a Glance NEW YORK.—Stocks steady, Rock Island leads rally in minor shares. MAKES $3,000,000 DURING ADVANCE IN STOCKS By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 22.—The sensational advance in prices has given rise to many rumors of “kill- ings” in the market by large opera- tors, but the actual facts are shroud- ed in secrecy. It is definitely known, however, that one large automobile manufacturer has a paper profit of nearly $3.000,- 000 in 40,000 shares of United States Cast Iron Plpe that he acquired at an average price around $60 a share. It =old at $147 a share last week, but was back around $135 yesterday on selling attributed to this man. While this line of stock was acquired months | ago, nearly half of the profit repre- sented has been registered since elec- tion day. — FOREIGN EXCHANGE. (Quotations furnished by W. B. Hibbs & Co.) BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 22—Further active speculation in the rails, prin- cipally St. Paul and New Haven, re- adjustment in the forelgn groub un- der the influence of the new French loan and a slightly lower level for high-grade investment securities were the features of the bond market at the close of the week. Interest in New Loan. Of these the most interesting was the actiqn of the forelgn issues. The new French loan now scheduled for offering on Monday will run 25 years, carry a 7 per cent coupon and be priced at 94. This is approximately a 7% per cent basis and explains the Scin i dbct ina 1o 1ok sA VR EanCE) onis to a point where they yleld about the same. It also may have had some- thing to do with the falling back in the German 7s, which today sold at exactly the same price as the French 7s will be offered at. Both these bonds run for 25 years and are, in other respects, so similar that their future market course will form an interesting comparison. Incidentally, Australian s are sell- ing a point and more above the quo- tations for the other two issues in this group. \ Foreign G Trading in all the foreign bonds was very active. Sinking fund sup- port for the French 73s is operative at par, where the bonds sold today. French Citles 6s, howcver, without sinking fund support, sustained ad- ditional, but small, losses. United Kingdom 5%s of 1937 sold today at thelr best price. Buying in the St. Paul and New Haven bonds went on today at about the best prices of the movement. The St. Paul 4s of 1925, at 76, were up 4 points on the week and there were substantial, but smaller, gains in _the longer term issues. New Haven 7s at 97, which is a lit- tle below their best quot terday, were up 3% points week, while the franc 7s at 9614 up more than six points. All improvement can be ascribed to con- fidence in the success of the refund- ing operations which both roads con- front next year. Liberty Loans Quiet. High-grade railroad savings bank mortgages continued heavy. There was not much important change in United States Government loans, al- though the Treasury 4% were down This sagging tendency in high-grade bonds makes all the more remarkable the prompt sale this week of the $600,000 Delaware and Hudson re- funding 48 of 1943 on a 4.82 per cent basle. Along the same line, testi- mony to confidence in easy money s the marketing of $12,925,000 11li- nois Central 4% per cent equipments to yield about 4.68 per cent. The investment market is in good shape to absorh the French loan next week. This week's total was only a little over $50,000,000. i LOANS CAUSE SURPRISE. Brokers Astonished by Small Amount of Money Wanted. NEW YORK, November 22.—Fall- ure of brokerage loans to show a large increase, despite the heavy daily turnover in the stock ket. has been partly due, it was said, to the disposition of the public for the most part to finance its purchase of stocks through local banks. A large | amount of high-grade securities also | have been absorbed by banks, insti- tutions and private banking firms. of shares have been bought daily, the money bor. rowed from banks by brokers to sup- ply the needs of customers has been astonishingly small. Many brokers assert their loans are not much up Actly bull movement after election day. Railroad and Utility Concerns Make Fine Records. NEW YORK, November 22.—The | preliminary report of the St. Louls and San Francisco Railway for Octo- ber shows an increase of $948,000 in net operating income to $2,450,000 compared with the same month last vear. Gross earnings gained $725,- | 000 to .®,811,000( while surplus of about $1,258,000 after taxes and charged increased $1,047,000. Central Power and Light Co. of St. Louis continues to show increases in gross and net earnings., For the 12 months ended September 30 gross gained 22,83 per cent over the previous year to $4,105,242, while net increased about 25 per cent to $1,411,000. FREIGHT TRAFFIC UP, Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, November 22.—Loads moved on the Seaboard Air Line Railroad during the first half of No- Vember show an increase over last year. The total for thé period was 88,999, compared with 83,796 for the same period in 1923. Total loads moved on the road ‘during ‘the second week in November amounted to 41,964, against 39,234 last year, a sub- stantial gain of 7 per cent. Traffic of the Baltimore and Ohio Rallroad for the first week in Novem- ber shows and increase, compared with the corresponding period last year. CHICAGO, November 22.—Renorts of a wet harvest in Argentina led to decidedly higher prices for wheat to- day during the early dealings. The advance was helped, too, by asser- tions that the big movements of wheat from the Dakotas and Minne- sota had virtually come to an end. Some of the buying of future de- liverjes here was said to be on foreign account, and there was gos- sip also of liberal mew export busi- ness. Opening prices, which ranged from 3 to % higher, December 1.50%; to 1.50%, and May 1.58 to 1.58%, were followed by material further gains. A pronounced let-up in country of- ferings of corn to arrive did a good deal to send corn and oats upward in price. After opening at 14 decline to 1 advance, May 1.19 to 1.19%, the corn market scored good gains all around. Oats started unchanged to % high- er, May 58 to 58%3a58%, and then con- tinued upgrade.
