CHICAGO, October 15.—Mrs. Mary Kummer, 23, the stolid good-natured mother of two children, yesterday, in & matter-of-fact way, related, accord- ing to the police, a story of how she had defrauded scores of people out of an aggregate of upward of $100,- 000 in an oil scheme. Mrs. Anna Wach- altew, her mother, is held as the soung woman's accomplice, although she is unable to speak English. Mrs. Kummer said she started the practice of securing money from friends to be invested in oil securi- ties when she was 17 years old, after having invested a small amount in some Texas oil property. She starter by obtaining $20, but found the larger returns she promises the more she could get, she told the police. As a result, she starter writing promisory notes for he clients, guar- o 3 invested in 1917, own mother was fooled, Mrs. Kummer said, but she said she finally told her mother that riches werc not likely to materialize. Much of the money, Mrs. Kummer told the police, had been spent in travel about the country. The scheme hit a snag, when 1924 rolled around and clients began arriving with notes for millions of dollars to be cashed, Mrs. Kummer explained. Nearly all her clients were foreign born. She said she had paid no dividents, but felt sorry for one persbn and returned $150 on a $500 investment. FORBES’ TRIAL DELAYED BEYOND ELECTION DAY Judge Carpenter Sets November 24 for Hearing, Doubting Chance of Fairness Now. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, October 15.—Trial of Col. Charles R. Forbes, former di- rector of the Veterans' Bureau, and John W. Thompson, St. Louis and Chicago contractor, on charges of conspiracy to defraud the Govern- ment and bribery charges, was set for November 24 by Federal Judge Carpenter yesterday. A formidable array of legal talent addressed the court as to the feasi- bility of trying the case before elec- tion day, November 4. Some time ago, when former Senator James Hamilton Lewis of counsel for Forbes declared there were political phases of the case and that it should not be tried before the election, Judge Carpenter had remarked briefly that “there is no politics in this court.” Today the judge expressed some doubt whether a fair jury could be obtained in the heat of an election campaign and November 24 was fixed as the date. LONDON, October 15.—King Ali, successor to his father. Hussein, as head of the Hedjas has established'the provisional center of the government at Jeddah, according to advices re- celved here. It was stated that King Ali had arrived safely at Jed- dah from Mecca, having left the Holy City with his forces in order to avoid bloodshed. Dispatches from Jeddah yesterday stated that King Ali's efforts to ar- range with the Wahabi tribesmen a cessation of hostilities had been un- successful.
