PASTOR IS HONORED | BY HEAD OF CHURCH Pope Confers Distinctive Decora- tion Upon Rev. Albert E. * Smith, Texas, Md. Epecial Dispateh to The Star. BALTIMORE, August 30.—Rev. Al- bert E. Smith, a former Washingto- nian, now pastor of St Joseph's Church at Texas, Md., and editor-in- chief of the Catholic Review, has been honored with the decoration Pro:Deo et Pontifice (for God and the Pope) by Pope Plus XI. The decoration Pro Deo et Pontifice was originated by Pope Leo XIII, to be conferred on those who render meritorious service in behalf of the chureh. The decoration is a medal containing among other ornaments a medallion of Pope Leo and was con- ferred on Father Smith in recogni- tion of his work in behalf of the Catholis press. Notification of the honor was sent by the Pope to Father Smith while the latter was in Rome with Mgr. Louis H. Stickney, rector of the cathedral. The decoration was con- firmed verbally by the Pope when he recelved Mgr. Stickney and Father Smith in private audlence in the pa- pal study. The Pope expressed himself as ex- ceedingly interested in the Holy Name convention which will be held in Washington next month. Father Smith is a native of Wash- ington. He studied at Gonzaga Col- lege, St. Charles' College and St. Mary's Seminary, and was ordained by the late Cardinal Gibbons. He has served as assistant pastor at St Mary's Church, Hagerstown; St John's Church, ' Frederick, and St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, Baltimore. He was called from the Star of the Sea to the cathedral to be secretary to Cardinal Gibbons, remalining until the cardinal's death. Archbishop Curley appointed Father Smith his secretary when he became head of the archdio- cese in 1921, Father Smith was assigned to the pastorate of St. Joseph's Church last year. He carries on his pastoral du- ties in addition to his editorial work. DR. WILFLEY IN EUROPE. Vermont Avenue Pastor to Give Lecture Series on Return. Rev. Dr. Earle Wilfley, pastor of the Vermont Avenue Christian Church, who is spending the Summer in Europe, is expected to resume his pulpit in the latter part of Septem- ber. Soon after his return he will announce the date of a lecture in the field, which has made him popular with Washington audiences, this to be the first of a Series of discourses based upon Old World settings. The board of officers of the church will hold its monthly meeting Thurs- day at 8 p.m. The Crusader class will be taught tomorrow at 10 o'clock by Jesse Guy Smith, director of religious education, and the Everyman class will enjoy the leadership of W. An office of the Lord’s Day Alli- ance has been opened at 532 Seven- teenth street northwest. A local or- ganization was formed recently, of which Rev. Dr. Geo F. Dudley, rector of St. Stephen's Protestant Episcopal Church, is president and Rev. C. H. Butler secretary. A num- ber of persons representing churches and men’s and women's societies were also elected to membership in the official board. Rev. Dr. George M. Cummings is chairman of the legi: tive committee. The object is to procure better Sun- day conditions and to lead the way in close co-operation with the churches and other community forces for the early enactment of the Jones Sunday rest law for the District. The Lord’s Day Alllance of the United States led the movement which closed the first and second class post offices (act of Congress, August 24, 1912), securing Sunday rest to 100,000 lettercarriers and post office clerks, and has since defeated here four at- tempts to have them reopened. In many States legislation has been en- acted through the efforts of the alli- ance for Sunday observance. KENTUCKIAN TO PREACH. Rev. Dr. George Ragland to Fill Pulpit at First Baptist. Rev.
