FINDS MIDSUMMER PINE IN INCREASED DEMAND Southern Association Reports In- dication of Soundness in Lumber Industry’s General Condition. NEW ORLEANS, present midsummer Southern pine lumber and timber is almost 40 per cent greater than in the corresponding period last year, and the statistical status of the in- dustry indicates a soundness in the industry’s general condition that has not been equaled since 1517, according to the Southern Pine Association’s “Economics and. Statistics Builetin” for August, which has just been fs- sued. Among other information concern- ing the general business situation of the country mentioned is that reve- nue car loadings reached tho high point thus far for the year during the week ended August 2; that re- cent government estimates forecast August 30.—The demand for THE EVENING STAR, country outside of New York city during July, 1924, exceeding by a considerable margin the value of per- mits and contracts recorded in July last vear, the banner building year in the Nation's history. The con- struction record for the first seven months of 1924 shows a substantial gain over the same period of 1923. The bulletin mentions that in the period from July 11 to August 15, 1924, weekly orders received for Southern pine, as reported to the Southern Pine Association by an av- erage of 126 subscribing mills, have averaged 678,273 feet per mill, or 6.1 per cent above normal production. This is an increase in demand of 39.6 per cent over the similar period a year ago. Weekly shipments during this perfod averaged 598,710 feet per mill, or 93.7 per cent of normal and 10.7 per cent above the corresponding period last vear. Weekly production averaged 544,672 feet per mill, or 8§5.2 per cent of normal, or 5.8 per cen: under that of the same period a year | == ago. McCormick Visits Herriot. COURSE FOR SALESMEN.
