Attempt No Law Violation, Ruling of Virginia Judge. NORFOLK, Va., August 15—At- tempting suicide 1s no crime in Vir- ginia, Judge O. L. Shackleford of the Corporation Court ruled today in the appeal case of Samuel Eugene Bray, Jr., who had asked the court to quash a warrant charging him with at- tempted self-destruction. Bray was arralgned some time ago in Police Court after he had taken polson in an attempt to end his life. His at- torneys contended there was no law against suicide in this State. Justice R. B. Spindle overruled the defense and sentenced Bray to a jail term for a misdemeanor. The appeal was from that decision. VIRGINIA WOMAN HELD. Neighbor Charges Attempt Was Made to Kill Him. Bpectal Dispatch to The Star. LURAY, Va, August 15.—Mrs. David Price, wife of a well known merchant of this county, was arrest- ed at her home at a iate hour last night upon a warrant charging her with attempting to kill a neighbor, Clyde Rothgeb. Her husband, in com- pany with Rothgeb, had gone to the home at Salem, to get grease or oil for one of the road-working machines. Price had entered his yard. Just as Rothgeb was preparing to enter the gate the woman called from 2n up- stairs window for him to stop. Roth- geb was told by .Price to follow him, &nd as he stepped into the yard Mrs. Prite fired the bullet, narrowly miss- ing Rothgeb, Rothgeb came to Luray and obtain- ed a warrant for Mrs. Price, who was lodged in the Luray jail. 10 YEARS FOR SWINDLE. Osder, a chiropractor, was yester- day convicted of having swindled a patlent out of $8930, and was sen- tenced to ten years in the county prison. The jury did not leave the courtroom to return its verdict. The plaintiff, Miss Amy C. 56, & school teacher, t Osder had induced her to make in- vestments through him, representing himself as proprietor of a private sanitarfum at Atlantic City. He plan- ned to open a chain of beauty shops, she said, and told her that Judge Gafy of the United States Steel Cor- poration and Jesse L. Livermore, a New York broker, were among his patrons. " The best all-around results, from the standpoint of efficiency of opera- tion and low cost, are obtained when the UV-201-A type of tubes are used throughout for oscillator, detectors and radio and audio frequency am- plifiers. The A battery current con- sumed by eight of these tubes is only equal to that consumed by two of the old type UV-200 and UV-201-A tubas, The storage battery used should be of as large an ampere-hour capacity as possible, . especlally 1f a power loud speaker which draws cutrent from the storage battery is used. An S0-ampere-hour battery is none too large, and a 100 to 120 ampere-hour battery is to be preferred. The B batteries should be of the largest size avallable, as they are the only ones which will operate efficiently and at the lowest cost on the heavy drain Imposed on them. The volume of sound produced in the detector stage on stations up to 500 miles away when using a loop aerial Is rather great, and it is some- times necessary to tinker around with the second detector circuit and the audio frequency amplifier stages be- fore the set can be made to operate satisfactorily without distortion when receiving strong signals. You will find it necessary to adjust the distances of the pick-up coll from the oscillator coils to get the best ad- justment for best results. This ad- justment, however, is not very crit- ical, the adjustment merely having the effect of increasing signal strength or selectivity as the dis- tance is varied. The same adjustment of distance of one coil from the other is also necessary between colls 30 and 31 or the filter coupler assembl The proper value of grid leaks will often help materially in clearing up weak signals. The same applies to the connection of a .1 to 1 mfd. condenser between the P termi- nal of the second stage amplifier tube 45 and the positive A battery lead. You may alro find that while you get good signals on the detector stage, there (s a decided tendency to distortion and nolse when the phones or loud speaker are connected into the first or second stage amplifier circuit. This tendency can often be overcome by connecting a .00025 to .001 mtd. fixed condenser between the P terminal of the socket and the positive A battery lead; by connect- ing & .000256 to .001 mfd. across the secoridary winding (between the G and F terminals) of the audio fre- quency transformer or transformers; by connecting a variable grid leak having a range of from ¥ to 10 megohms across the secondary wind- ings of the transformers, or by con- necting both condensers and grid leaks across the transformer wind- ings. Tuning of the recelver is done practically entirely with the two va- riable condensers and the potentiom- eter, To begin with, the movable arm of the potentiometer is set about one- quarter turn from the negative A battery terminal of the potentiome- ter, in this case the B terminal of the potentiometer, The tuning condenser 3 is then va- ried about five degrees at a time, and for each setting the oacillator condenser 6 Is turned slowly through its entire range until signals are ob- tained. The signals can then be cleared up by adjustment of both condensers and the potentiometer and by turning the loop until best signal strength is obtained. Proficiency in the manipulation of the controls is galned only through & little practice. 1If you have a little difficulty at first, do not come to the —_— e e et Long Range Radio Entertainment FRIDAY, AUGUST 15, 1924.
