NEW YORK, June 18.—The straw- berry market was generally dull and weak today with liberal receipts and a comparatively light demand. Ow- ing to the irregular quality and con- dition of fruit, prices ranged from 8 to 16 cen ver quart. Gooseberries sold slowly at 10 to 18 cents a quart, while four-quart baskets rang=d from 65 to 75 cents. Barreled apples of ‘fancy quality met_a fair outlet, but inferior stock received little attention. “A" grade 214-inch Baldwins sold from $4 to $5 per barrel, and russets brought mostly $4. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 18.—Contlicting reports concerning the effects of con- tinued high temperatures on crop progress in the southwest seemed largely responsible for nervous and irregular fluctuations in today’s early trading in the cotton market. Liverpool was better than due and. after opening at a decline of 1 to 6 points, prices here steadied on cov- ering, selling 3 to 4 points above yeste closing quotations. Of- ferings increased on the bulge, how- ever, and prices soon reacted from July and from 2 to for October, making the mu ket about 6 to 10 points net lower. Cotton futures closed firm. ton market opened quict but steady. First trades showed gains of 4 to § points over the previous close. July promptly eased off 16 points to 2 and October dropped to 24.52, or 13 points off from the opening high. Liv- erpool was better than duc, with spot sales of 8,000 bales, and w sent reports of damaging and sandstorms. ntiment, ne theless, seemed reactionary because of the poor goods trade mill cul tailment. Baltimore Making New Record in Maritime Commerce. BALTIMORE, June 1S.—Figures submitted in the weekly report by the collector of the port seem to indi- cate Baltimore will make 1924 a ban- | ner year from a maritime point of { view. The report shows business con- tinued to boom, with exports holding up exceptionally well. Total imports, consisting largely of copper bullion,’ fruit, Philippine su- gar, paper and chemicals on the fre¢ list, and fruit, molasses, sceds and tableware on the dutiable 1 were vaiued last week at $2, which $1,521,641 came in fre —_— CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET. CHICAGO, June 1S.—Wheat and corn went up with a rush today as soon as the market opened. All deliv- eries of both cereals jumped to new high price records for the season. A sharp advance in wheat quotations at Liverpool was largely rgsponsible for the ascent of the market here, espe- cially as Winnipeg prices showed even more strength than was the case in Chicago. Heavy profit-taking sales on the advance, however, led to considerable reaction from top figures. The opening, which ranged rom % to 1% cents higher; July, 116 to 1.16%, and September, 1.17% to 173, was followed by a rise that amounted to nearly two cents in some cases before a sttback took place. Offerings of corn were remarkedly ce. Prospects of a revision of freight rates east of Chicago was a_bullish factor. ~After opening % to 1 cent higher, July, 83% to 84, the market climbed rapidly. Oats derived strength ~from the action of corn and wheat. Starting unchanged to % up, July, 46%, prices scored g moderate general advance. Higher quotations on hogs helped to lift the provision market. WHEAT— Open. High low. Zuly 116 LI 1.1 117% Septem| December 11953 1.19% September Ll 10D ILIO 110 1102 B RAW SILK RISE HALTS.
