REAL ESTATE. Ef-Husband Can Shave Mustache Wife Can Bob Hair, Court Rules New York Judge Avers That Personal Appearance Proves an Exception to Wedding Promise of “Honor, Love and Obey.” lidated Press, NEW YORK, June 7.—Does the promise to “obey” in the wedding ceremony go so far as to require a wife to get the consent of her hus- band before she has her hair bobbed? Police Judge Joseph Connolly of this city holds that it does not. He clieves that if a man can go down town in the morning and shock his wife and children by appearing sud- denly at the dinner table with his mustache or his erstwhile whiskers missing, there is no reason on earth why a woman should not have her tresses trimmed without first getting the husbandly consent. The judge feels that the bobbing of the hair is nothing more than a new style of headdress and he contends that cer- talnly a woman in these modern times is entitled to that much of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Old Style Husbands. There are many “old style” hus- bands, however, who flatly have for- bidden their wives to fall in line with the new vogue, and consequently therg are just as many women “dy- ing”, to get a boyish bob with a lit- tle' V-shape peak down the back of the neck, but who do not dare to in- vite the ire of the head of the house. Some husbands have gone so far as to threaten to leave their wives if they succomb to the prevailing pas- sion for bobbing. It is all very well 10 talk about the new era of equal- ik\' for woman, but just the same there are comparatively few wive: who care—one might almost sa dare—to run contrary to their hus- bend's expressed wishes in matters ofspersonal appearance. With single Eiris or b elor maids it is entirely different. They have a true inde- pendence Judge Connolly's thoughts on hair bobbing were engendered by an ex- perience in court with an irate hus- band who was al to have “as- sauked and his flapper wife because she appeared home late one afternoon all bobbed up and marceled within an inch of her life. The husband took one look at the nd then took a couple of swings proceeding to maul fe when the neighbors interfered. Then he hauled off to court. »The wife testified that she had been Yegging her husband for a long time €0 let her have her hair bobbed and two days ago she understood him to give his consent. Her joy knew no bounds. She had already picked out the very shop to do the bobbing, and as soon as the housework was done for the day she was off for the big adventure in the barber chair. When the artisan completed his work she ‘was pleased heyond all words. She thought her husband would be glad he had given his consent and would admit that his fears and prejudices were all wrong. A Surprised Wife. Only a woman, perhaps, can imag- irre the surprise of this poor wife when, instead of words of commenda- tion and affection, she was greeted with fisticuffs as soon as the tight- fitting little cloche hat was removed from the unsuspecting head. «The husband vowed and declared in court that he never gave his consent and never would have given it. He further declared that he would not live in the same house with his wife until her hair grew out again. Judge Connolly attempted to take issge with the irate defendant on some of the strong points he made for husbandly control over would-be bBYbed-haired wives, but the defend- ang lashed out at the judge, with as much fury as he had swiped at his tfusting little wife. The judge took thelside of the wives and got the bet- ter. of the argument when he sen- tefreed the man to jail for five days 14r contempt of court. The wife had meekly withdrawn the charge of as- sault and battery. Later the husband almed down. He told the judge he needed at home to provide for his ! their wives shall do. wife and their two sons. So sen- tence was suspended. His Parting Shot. The husband's parting shot to the court—in fact, he sald he wanted to tell the whole wide world—was that in any event, he would not speak to his wife until her hair grows out. So Mrs. Mildred Welin has her bob, even if she is getting the silent treat- ment at the old fireside. Harry Welin still stands out for the rights of hus- bands to say just what and what not He takes liter- ally the words of the wedding cere- mony—even if most modern women do regard it as obsolete. 1,511,045 LIVE IN MOSCOW Sixth of Population Classed as of- ficials. 7.—he population of which MOSCOW, June of Moscow is now 1,511,04 354,754 are Russians. CONSTANTINOPLE, June 6.—To re- lieve the city and its suburbs of a de- structive plague of crows the authori- ties are issuing free powder and shot, and every mala citizen is required to present at least one dead crow to the nearest police station or pay a fine of 125 piastres. ‘Always present in large numbers this year these Crows, or more pre- clsely rooks, have become a pest and have done much damage. They have ravaged the truck gardens around the city and on the Prinkipos Islands, those beautiful resorts in the Sea of Marmora, they have caused a water famine. The water supply of the i{slands is solely from cisterns and the birds have so fouled the roofs as to make the water unpotable. Woman Engineer Opens Office.
