All around stood a crowd of gorge ously uniformed men and beautifully gowned women forming the court of the new lord high commissioner, the Marchioness of Allsa attending Mrs. Brown as lady-in-waiting, and the Marquis of Clydesdale standing by Brown as aide, while halberdiers carrying Lochaber axes formed the guard of honor. The ceremony was brief and merely formal, but it was marked through- out by grave dignity, to which the unobtrusive bearing of the central figures contributed. PARIS, May 20.—An extraordinarily peculiar case referred to the faculty of medicine has resulted in an Itallan woman, born in France, ob- taining a court decree at Draguig- nan, sotuh France, changing her sex. The subject, twenty-three years old, was chambermaid in a hotel at Cannes, near Nice. At birth she was christened Marie Antoinette and ever since had been thought td be a female. However, following oertain recently experienced physiological troubles, Marie Antoinette doubted her true sex and consulted doctors, who found that her sex had changed from female to male and issued cer- tificates to that effect. Marie Antolnette has also changed her name to Marius Antoine and, as she did not claim Italian nationality ay the age of twenty-one, according to French law she is now not only a man, but a Frenchman and as such will have to submit to a military and medical examination with the view of doing military duty.
