Firearms in the hands of children took another toll in the death of Charles Ault, nine-year-old son of Policeman Ray Ault, who was fatally shot while near West Falls Church yesterday afternoon. Young Ault, who lived at 1322 Military road, was visiting some rel- atives in West Falls Church. He saw some other boys fishing and ran to join them. John Oswald, eleven years old, of 2852 Belair road, had a rifle and when it became jammed Oswald attempted to “break” it and, he declares, warned the others to stand out of the way. As the rifle “broke” it exploded and Ault fell, shot through the stomaoch. The wounded boy was carricd to the home of C. V. Shreve of Falls Church by Charles Collins, colored, who heard the commotion following the & dent. Ms. Shreve placed Ault in automobile and rushed him to Georgetown Hospital, where efforts were made in vain to save his life. | The boy died on the operating table. Authoritics Investigating Tragedy Virginia authorities investigating the tragedy declared it was an acci- dent and released Oswald in the cus- tody of his mother. No inquest will be held. The boy is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mollie Ault; his father, Ault; two brothers, John R jr. and Edmund Ault. and Dorothy Ault. Funeral services not yet been arranged. Bids have been in- vited by the office of public buildings and grounds and it is expected that the construction work will begin within the next two weeks. Because of the upward slant of the windows at the top of the mofu- ment water leaks in through them to the interior of the tall shaft from the sloping sides of the apex. It has become particularly ~ objectionable this spring, so much so that it caused Col. C. O. Sherrill to determine upon a correction. The gutter will be made of aluminum, and will be fast- ened to the stones of the apex, at angular positions, a short distance above the windows.
