K ' ASK TEN MILLIONS . AS PENSION FUND Southern Methodists Launch Drive in Every Church of Denomination. a ST. LOUIS, Mo., February $10,000,000 endowment fund move- ment was formally launched yester- day fn all Southern Methodist churches, the Income from which s to be used to care for the old and infirm superannuated preachers of the church. It is perhaps the largest movement of its kind ever under- taken by a single denomination. The first substantial gift announced fis that of $100,000 provided by Paul Brown, & St. Louls broker. The effort is under the special di- rection of the board of finance, St. Louis, of which Bishop W. F. Mec- Murry of Louisville is chairman and Rev. Dr. Luther E. Todd, St, Louis, is secretary. The beard was formed by the general conference of 1918 solely for this work, and its plan ©of campaign adopted by the general conference of 1922, Organization Complete. The plan for the ralsing of the huge sum to bring relief to the aged and worn-out preachers, 1,000 in number, and the widows of preach- ers, has now been presented to each annual conference, and the work of organization is virtually complete down to the last church. Dr. Todd in a statement {ssued to the church styled “The Forgotten Man,” which has been broadcasted throughout the Southern Methodist connection, says this of the need for urgent action: “The —plight of superannuated preachers in the Methodist Episcopal Church South is such as constantly to threaten the morale of the active preachers. Red-blooded men will not continue to give their lives in sacri- ficial service to people who have £o little reward for men after they have worn themsclves out In that service. They feel that the Lord does not cali them to be the victims of narrow- visioned and thoughtless people who call themselves Christians. Neglect of Preachers. “The one thing above &ll others that hinders the work of the church today is the terrible neglect of her preachers. This is true as referred to the men in active service, but it is most shockingly and painfully irue concerning the superannuates. Let the church see that her active men receive higher salarles and that the pitiful needs of her superannuates are abundantly cared for, and the re- action would be felt in a distinctly forward movement in every depart- ment of her work.” Four hundred of the used-up preachers, according to Dr. Todd, are practically blind or deaf; about 450 are more or less Invalids, and nearly all of them are In constant danger of the wolf that snaps and snarls at their doors. Some widows, who gave and sacrificed through long lives a circuft riders’ wives, are in old pe ples’ homes, and a few are in poor- houses. “If such facts do not move s to action, can we still call our- selves Christians?” Dr. Todd asks the church in his message. MANAGERS TO MEET. Will Report on Status of Metho- dist Home. The annual meeting of the board of managers of the Methodist Home will be held at Trinity M. E.
