J. Andrew White, the premier radio fight announcer. Wil- sln won the title from Mike O'Dowd and kept it through an unusual series of trials and tribulations until Harry Greb took it away from him last summer at the Polo Grounds. William Jennings Bryan will ap- pear before WJY's microphone Mon- day night. He will speak on “The Campaign of 1924." WCAP has received a letter from John 8. Browne, wireless operator on the steamship Acme, who listened in on the station's program on Decem- ber 28, when the prize distance con- test was conducted by the Wardman Park Hotel management. At the time the Acme was off Cape Corriente state of Jalasco, Mexico, in the Va- cific ocean, 1,905.5 miles from the \ashington navy yard as the crow es. . Browne wrote that he not_only heard the prize number by the Ward- mun Park Hotel Orchestra and a number of other selections, but was unable to radio his results because | the captain “does not ullow the send- ing set to run after dark unless very important, and as ho was asicep at the time I could not get a wire in on time. As readers of this column will re- member, the $25 prize was won by a listener in Oregon. The management of the Wardman Park Hotel, how- ever, felt that although the contest had long since closed, that under the clreumstances the ship operator wir- ranted some recognition for his in- terest and trouble to rcport his ex- perience, that it was decided to give {him a present of a check for $10. } The steamship Acme is bound for Providence, R. T, and is expected to arrive today from San Pedro, Calif., via Panama canal. Mueh has been said about the silent night, and the war still is on. But what interest could a man who does not own a radio recelving set huve in the subject. Yet, he has. A citizen, Who Vvouches that he is perce-loving and law-abiding, writes “Put me down as in favor of a silent night, and I am not a_radio f: He complains not of local stations, of “tube saucechers,” of aerial inter- ference; but of earthly all-night dancing above nent, the “corn parties” on side ‘and the “what-not” hen: while he twists and turns through the long, restless hours of the night “Please, glve me a silent night just tor & night."" is his final plea. “TCT TUT TUT-TUT-TUT.” And yesterday local radio fans add- ed another to their growing ligt of the incredible. and broadcast (by word of mouth) the following heard Egypt last night How did you know it was Bgypt.” | “There could be no mistake about it.
