The dividend meeting is scheduled for January 28, and it is expected that an extra of % of 1 per cent will be declared so as to make a full % per cent for the year. Steel is now regarded definitely as a 6 per cent stock, with very good chances of more being paid in the shape of ex- tras during 1924. Independent steel shares followed along with notable strength in Re- public and Gulf States, the former making a new high on the present move. With back dividends on the pre red entirely wiped out, Repub- lic common now is in line to receive something. Studebaker Starts Break. ‘The market continued strong until Jjust before midday, when heavy sell- ing appeared in Studebaker, causin & sharp break in that stock, a sympa- thetic decline in Chandier Motors, and checking the buying movement in Arrow preferred, which had a fewture at the outset. Despite falling off in the final quarter, Studebaker earnings for 1923 will run well above $20 a share. But the street was thinking' more today about the futu: and was s; ing that Studebaker could not very well hope to maintain in 1924 th extruordinary scule of operations of last vear. 0il shares were not affected by the continued pressure against the Pan- Americans. There were short-lived outbursts of buying in stocks of the specialty cluss, like Davison Chemical, Savage Arm; May Department Stores, Famous Players, New York Air Brake, Industrial Alcohol and International Combustion Engineering. Lehigh Valley Leads Rails. Among the rails, Lehigh Valley was the leader. At 68 it was up nearly & points within a week. This move has had in view the Reading experience bevause trading will shortly begin in the Lehigh Valley rights, issued un- der the segregation plan. Estimates of what these rights will sell for run from $15 to $25 a share. The publication of last week's fig- ures cn oil production and imports ut this etween’” season shed turther light upon the statis 1 po- sition of the industry today. There was an- Increase of 12,250 barrels in the average daily domestic output— mostly in California, Wyoming and Montana-—while imports dropped off 55,000 barrels daily. The weakness in the Pan-American Petrolewm issues was conspicuous again today, both the “A" and “B" stocks breaking to their lowest in more than a year.
