Mann, “I ate three meals a day, collected bugs, listened to the most conflicting sort of rumors, read the proclamations of the revolutionary government and altogether had a very dull time of it. The revolution caught us completely by surprise. We had intended to push on south. Overnight we found that the rallroad line probably was and when we £ot to Manzanillo we found the har- bor closed. There was nothing to do but_wait until something turned up. “The people knew that they were | in rebel territory, but I never was able to learn from them what the re- volt was all about. When we asked anybody on the street his invariable answer yag: “I have a very bad cold today. Dr. Mann entered Mexico to study | the habits of the fruit fly, one of the most dreaded of southern parasites, in winter. He journeyed through lower California” and then south along the coast until he reached | Guadalajara, where the revolution cut | short his activities. | New Specimens Found. He brought back to Washington | a number of entirely new species of insects which will be studied and’ classified here. His most prized find was a female army ant. Only five or six of these ever have been col- lected and his discovery has created considerable excitement among ento- mologists here. These insects, which travel by the hundreds of thousands in almost perfect military formation, are very minute. The queen, how- ever, is five or six times the size of any of the “soldlers.” She keeps her- self very effectively concealed. He also discovered a number of beetles which are believed new to sclence.
