McNair, president of the Michigan College of Mines here, was { knocked unconscious and sevorely in jured about the face, head and back by Clarence L. Christiansen, former instructor in the college, who is alleged to have attacked Dr. McNafr fn his private office on December 22, accord ing to testimony in court. The alleged assault became known when Christian- sen was given a preliminary hearing on a charge of assault with intent to dn great bodily harm, less than the crime of murder. According to testimony given by Dr | McNair, Christiansen was asked by the president to resign on December 20 be. cause of conduct in the classroom which was not approved by the pres: dent. Two days later, Dr. McNair tes tified, Christfansen called upon him and was invited into the president's private office. “He said that I had insulted and demanded an apoiogy,” Dr. McNair testified, “adding that he was going to beat me up and that one of the two of us would be dragged out As the president arose from his chair, according to the testimony, he suffered a blow that rendered him vir- tually unconscious. By the Associated P NEW YORK, January 11.—Taxing the churches with a large share of the responsibility for what he termed “spiritual illiteracy” in this country, Dr. S. G. Hefelbower of Car- thage College, at the annual dinner of the National Lutheran Educational conference declared the great need of today was more rellgious education. ‘We have 8,000,000 children, Amer- ican Protestant, under the age of 10, growing up in non-church homes. id D Hefelbower. *“We have 27 - 000,000 voung people not enrolled in any Sunday school or cradle roll and getting no religious education of any description. Spiritual illiteracy is a fact and the church cannot deny n large share of the responsibility for such a condition.” The only efficient Sunday school teachers in the Lutheran Church in this country, he asserted, were found in the Lutheran parochial schools intained by the German division in the synod of Missouri, and the joint synods in Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa. GOVERNMENT DROPS DRAFT DODGER CASES Atlanta Officials Receive Orders to Nolle Pros Prosecu- tions. o By the Associated Press ATLANTA, Ga., January 11.—Appro imately 450 cases charging alleged vio- lation of the selective draft laws dur- ing the world war by men residing in the jurisdiction of the United States court for the northern district of Georgia, were ordered nolle prossed from Washington yesterday. Officials of the district attornev's office say that many of the alleged violators enlisted in the service on their own volition, without waiting for the selective draft. These men, it was said, failed to notify local boards of their action, and the cases against them resulted. Also, officials claim, a number of cases were against men who left this section when their names were drawn, many of whom have not returned. Advices received by the United States district attorney’s office did not state the reason for the government's action, but attaches of the offices ex- pressed the opinion that it was in line with the orders issued recently freeing war-time prisoners.
