FORD OFFERS POWER TO CITY OF DETROIT Tells Acting Mayor He Can Pro- i vide Current at Lower Cost "' Than Any Other Source. By the Assochted Press. DETROJT, January 11.—Henry Ford, in conference yesterday with Acting Mayor Joseph A. Martin, offered to provide the ¢ity of Detroit with power from the new Ford Motor Company plant being constructed at River Rouge, it was learned today when Mr. Martin called a conference of the public lighting. commission to consider the offer. The clty has voted ito spend $12,000,000 to build & power plant. Mr. Ford expressed the opinion that he could sell power to Detrolt at smaller cost than the city could produce its own. Mr. Ford told the acting mayor that in his opinion the present is a transi- tory period and that the proposed city plant—a four-unit one to furnish rower for street lighting and operat- ing the street rallway—would be obsolete within a short time after its completion. He seriously questioned the essentiality of the city's investing 312,000,000 in & power plant when it can purchase power at less cost than it could produce it. Mr. Martin, in calling the lighting commission conference expressed the <pinion that the city should go ahead with its plans to build, even though having at bhand a large corporation With an excess supply of power. The city, he sald, should not depend upon large corporations for its service. —_— The Dusons, one of the Malayan Taces inhabiting north Borneo, have a superstitious belief that it is un- wise to point to a ralnbow, as the finger that is used to point with will Shirts Shirts .. $1 and $1.50 Cravats 19c 3 for $2.00 “EMPEROR JONES” STIRS BERLIN PAPER’S PROTEST Monarchist Organ Calls Play American Search for Sensations.
