O, WEDNE RED CROSS FUSION RICH PEASANT SLAYS AXSLAVEROF 4 BELEVED CAUGHT Birmingham Officials' Con- fident Man Arrested Is Guilty Party. By the Associated Press. BIRMINGHAM, Ala., December 12. —Police and county officials expect to gather further evidence today con- necting Fred Glover, negro, with at least & part of the series of twenty- four ax murders that have occurred in Birmingham. Glover has been identified by Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Sparks as the negro who hit s. Sparks over the head as they were crossing a vacant lot Sunday after- noon. Mrs, Spurks is recovering from her wounds. The finding of a bloody hatchet and a pistol in Glover's room and his criminal record add weight to the belief of officlals that they have ar- rested the right man this time. It is pointed out also that while he was in prison on another charge some time ago there were none of the ax attacks. Glover has been identified by the county bureau of identification as the negro convicted in February, 1920, for burglary and grand larceny and sentenced to the county road for thir- teen months. “We are sure we have the right man, and we think we are going to be able to place the responsibility for the other attacks that have been made all along,” sald Sollcitor Jim Davis. “This man Glover has a crim- inal record and circumstances link him with the crime.” So many fruitless arrests have been made in the past that there are with the crimes which, besides the twenty-four killed, have included twenty-three others who have been serlously injured. —_— CANADIAN OFFICIAL ILL.
