S. Loans Strong—For- eign Groun Firm—Railroad Issues Irregular. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. ccial Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, November §—With but few exceptions strength prevailed throughout today's bond market, re- flecting Investment buying of high- grade securities based on the money outlook, the more favorable feeling in evidence in the stock market and the optimism born of the reception accorded to recent meis issues, The buying of gilt-edge bonds was ! selective, attention being concen- trated on a comparatively small num- yber of desirable issues. Prominent {among these were Louisville and Nashville unified 4s fn the railroads and United States Steel sinking fund in the industrials. Central Pacific first 4s and New York Central s were in demand. Government Loans Strong. All the United States government loans w strong. Apparently the probability of the passage of a bonus bill is having no adverse effect just now. Among the specialtie: I strength was shown by Market Street Ratlway 5s and 6%, the former ad- vancing a point in the first two hours. There continued recovery in the 3d Avenue adjustment 5s, 2 points above the recent low. Railx Are Irregular. Speculative rails were more or less irregular, with the St. Paul and the Missouri Pacific issues failing to show much rallying puwer. By the Associated Press, NEW YORK. November 8.—The cot- ton market opened barely steady at a decline of 11 to 15 points, and the active positions sold 70 to 72 points net lower after the call under heavy realizing and selling for a reaction. The latter was encouraged by the rather easier ruling of Liverpool and reports of warmer weather In the |belt, but trade interests were active |buyers on the declines, which also | brought in rebuying by recent sellers {and prices soon recovered a good part lu.’ the loss. LOCAL WHOLESALE MARKET. Meat dealers today reported the market as being “draggy.” There was very little demand for meats, dealers reported, and there was prac- { tically no change in prices. Cholce cuts of beef were in greatest demand at top prices. Lamb and -veal prices were reported the same as earlier in the week, the market on both meats being steady. Chickens and ducks were in fairly good demand at prevailing prices. The supply of poultry is in excess of the demand, dealers said, in explana- tion of the drop in prices. Today's Chicago Prices. CHICAGO, November 8—With Liv- erpool quotations showing a decline and with predictions current that the United States' visible supply total on Monday would show a liberal in- crease, the wheat market here under- went a decline today during the early dealings. British plans for tarift measures likely to Interfere with United States trade were construed as a bearish factor, although wheat is excepted from the proposed action. On _the other hand, corn strength tended to check wheat prices down- turns. The_opening, which ranged from % to % lower, with December, 1.05 to 1.06%, and May, 110% to 110%, was followed by a further set- | back before the market showed power to_rally. Persistent buying on the part of commission houses, together with smallness of receipts gave a lift to corn and oats. December corn equal- ed the season's high-price record, touching 78. After opening % to % higher, December, 77% to %, the corn market sagged a little and climbed again. Oats started 3% to 34al higher, De- cember, 42%, and later showed fur- ther galns. Provisions were firm, in line with hogs and corn. In the final dealings the wheat mar- ket reversed its action and rose with corn, WHEAT— High, December l.o\‘i . 2 i 2 P PEE ST EARNINGS DROP OFF.
