24 * Puncture of Pinchot Bubble Said to Overshadow Election! Observers See Pennsylvania Governor Thrown Into Discard by Drys Who Board Coolidge Bandwagon. By DAVID LAWRENCE. Straws which show which way the national winds of politics may be blowing are too few today to draw any worthwhile conclusions and, while the headquarters of both the major parties profess to find satis- faction in what has happened, there are only a few things slgnificant in Tuesday's cleotions. First, the expectation of the "dry” forces that New York state would punish the democrats for repealing the state enforcement law on prohibi- tion was to some extent fulfilled, as the democrats lost seven members and the republicans retained control. Second, the “wet” sentiment showed itself as strong as ever in Maryland, where Gov. Ritchie was re-elected ~ by an overwhelming majority. Both camlidates were “wet,” but Mr. Ritchie was wet enough to earn the indorsement of the Association Op- posed to the Prohibition Amendment. | Third. Mr. Mellon halls from Pennsylvania and will have a good deal to say about the delegation from the Keystone state to the natlonal convention. Now comes Wayne B. Wheeler, gen- eral counsel of the Anti-Saloon League, and the acknowledged leader of the "dry" forces in America, with a statement Indorsing not only Presi- dent Coolidge's efforts to enforce pro- hibition, but putting the stamp of ap- proval on Secretary Mellon, too. Mr. Wheeler says if the states will only do as much as the federal government has done, all will be well. This is interpreted as meaning that even if Gov. Pinchot himself would use his state power he would get better results in_Pennsylvania. But the most dramatic development is the willingness of the Anti-Saloon | Coolidge. The support of the Anti- W THE EVENING istration 1s important politically and if, as is again and again rumored, the democrats name a “wet"” the entire strength of the Anti-Saloon League will be behind the republican presidential nominee. When Gov. Pinchot came to WasN-. ington and presided over the citizen-. ship conference on prohibition, it generally believed the “dry"’ foi were usink the Pinchot barrage means of bringing President Coolldger| and Secretary Mellon into closer har< mony with the Anti-Saloon Leagu program. plished, the “drys” think more is t be gained by upholding the feder: administration than by fighting it. ¢ Gov.
