Rising amid the enveloping ap- plause for his opponent young Roose- velt steeled himself for his final rebuttal, Lauds Patriotixm. “Gentlemen,” he said, with winning earnestness, “my distinguished op- yonent has condemned ‘isms' most ably. 1 am granted five minutes to reply. 1 shall not consume that time. I shall not require a full minute. “Gentlemen, 1 commend to your thoughtiul consideration but a single word—patriotism. “A thunder of applause greeted the reply, and thus, with Americanism ~—the'theme of his first and last public address to America—was Roosevel® acclalmed victor in his maiden public debate. “That was when 1 was cighteen,” Mrs. Robinson concluded.
