St Paul stocks were extremely weak’ and théy were not helped b the statement attributed to the presi- dent of the road that September earn- ings had been the best of any month in two years and that there was every reason to expect that the vear would end with fixed charges fully covered. Private estimates d upon trafic Teports and adjusted to seasonal va- Tiations have not figured St. Paul as earning more than 90 per cent of its interest requirements. Along with this there is the ominous record of years of deficits even if partially offset by federal comp ituation has b v low selling prices of the Paul bonds. The 4 per cents matur- ing in less than two years were quot- ed at 69 today, which is an enormous discount to contemplate. It does not necessarily mean a fear of default, but it does retlect the opinion that when it comes to refinancing a great sacrifice will have to be made in the Bhape of higher interest rates Missouri Pacific Also Weak. Un- settled Market. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispatch to The Star, NEW YORK, October 25.—The bond market again today was highly. ir- regular, even erratic, with weakness in some Issues and strength in others, with and without assignable reason. Trading both on the board and “over the counter” was active. High-grade investment securities were strong. L was notably the case with United States government loans, Both the second 4%s and the fourth 4%s liberty.issues sold at 98. The tax exempt 3%s sold at par. Activity was principally in evidence in the lower priced issues. High-Grade Ralls Strong. There was sustained strength also in the very high-grade railroad bonds such s Atchison general 4s, Norfolk and_Western 4s, Central Pacific first 4s, New York Central 3%s and Ore- gon-Washington Railway and Nav gation 4s. Trading in these and simi- lar issues was brisk ‘“over the counter” and close markets were quoted on the principal issues. A plausible explanation of the strength in the high-grade issues is the pros- pect of easy money for some time to come. It was also reported today that buying orders fromm Burope had agaii appeared in the market. Other Issues Weak. The other side of the market was the extreme weakness in the St. Paul and Missouri Pacific bonds, especially the former. Several of the junior St. Paul bonds made new low records in addition to those reached yesterday. The short term 4s of 1925, the St. time below 70. The convertible 43 of 1932 sold below' 53 and the r. funding 4%:3 of 2014 sold below 48. ‘The general mortgage 3 4s and 418, secured by first lien most of stems, were not much affected. In the case of the Missouri Paclfic the general 4s of 1975 selling below 49} made a new low record for all time | and the refunding D 6s 6f 1949 drop- | ping below 87 did the same. In both these cases weakn bonds preceded that in the stock. The Northern Pacific bonds are all en- titied to a high investment rating, but they have been more or less heav ail during the decline in the stoc Today, however, they displayed dis< tinct” improvement Interest in New Haven. Interest was taken in the New Haven situation because of the op- timistic statements attributed to of- ficlals. NEW ORLEANS, August 25.—Better cables than due and continued abnor- mally cold weather over the belt, caused buying on the opening of the cotton market today. Ginning figures to October 18 of 6,400,579 bales, just about met expectations and did not have much influence, although the output of the gins was regarded as small for this time of the year. After advances of 20 to 31 points prices fell off, at the end of the first half hour to levels 1 point over to 4 points under the close of yesterday. Decem- ber traded up to 29.90, and fell back to 29.68. Noon Bids on Cotton. Vegetables from nearby and distant points proved an attractive feature of-today's market, supplies indicating anything but a shortage. Thero was a noticeable improvement in the qual- ity of potatoes. White potatoes were quoted at from $2 to $3.50 a barrel, while the price of sweeet potatoes ranged from $2.50 to §2.00 a barrel. Sugar corn, always in demand, is becoming scarce. The same is true of tomatoes. There are many green tomatoes on hand for pickling pur- poses, and they find ready sale at fairly good prices. There is still a moderate supply of lima beans to be had at 35 and 45 cents a quart. Kale and spinach are fairly_plentiful and of good quality.
